With the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Venom: Let There be Carnage, and Spider-Man: No Way Home and Morbius set to release on April 1st, 2022, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on October 7th, 2022, Sony Pictures is ready to move on to its next film. That film will bring another villain or anti-hero into their version of the Spider-Verse, and that’s Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven The Hunter. Now it seems eyes are on Taylour Paige to take on the role of the voodoo priestess herself, Calypso.
Who is Calypso?
Calypso is best known for granting Kraven his enhanced abilities and manipulating his obsession with Spider-Man to the point of driving him to suicide in the comics. She is a powerful voodoo priestess who has come close to bringing the web-slinger to his death on several occasions. She is also infamous for escaping and reversing her own death.

Calypso could be a genuinely impactful presence in the film and a massive threat to many characters in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Verse. The character first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #209. At first, Calypso was only going to be a minor villain but developed into a significant character that drove Kraven mad. She pushed his obsession with Spider-Man into major conflicts, even though Kraven grew to respect him and even teamed up with him over the years. Calypso also appeared in several Daredevil comics and even took over the Lizard. She also appeared in the 90’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series and in different video game versions. Her role in the film most likely will not be a small one, but that, of course, is just a guess.
Kraven was very close to being the villain in No Way Home, but we know they took the film in a different direction. Now Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to take on the role in his own solo feature instead. We recently learned that Fred Hechinger, star of HBO’s The White Lotus, has been cast and is most likely set to play as the Chameleon. We heard that over the summer that Jodie Turner-Smith was going to take on the role of Calypso; however, sources over at The Illuminerdi have informed us that the new focus is on Paige. Paige is known for her incredible performances in Zola and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She also gained numerous award nominations and is trained in ballet, which we saw from her amazing role in High School Musical 3.
Sony Pictures has been working with the characters they have control over as well as working with Marvel in terms of Spider-Man. However, they have been teasing their own sort of Villain-Verse, which we have seen from the Morbius trailers and both Venom films. Kraven The Hunter is written by Richard Wenk, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway and will be directed by JC Chandor. Currently, we do not have a release date or any plot details at this time.
