A trio of new posters for Paramount Pictures’ upcoming video game sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, tease the arrival of beloved Sega characters Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Vibing with all the color and vibrancy that you could want from pictures of Sonic the Hedgehog and his crew, the posters, which have been released via Twitter, are sure to have fans excited to see Tails team up with Sonic and take down a villainous Knuckles the Red Echidna.

No doubt in an effort to avoid the scathing, extremely costly backlash that came with the initial design of Sonic for the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, both Tails and Knuckles look as close to their pixilated predecessors as possible. Both Tails and Knuckles look as if they have leaped out of the Sega video game and onto the big screen, and with the vocal talents of both Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba on board, the pair should provide Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with oodles of action-packed fun.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Released in 2020 following a $5 million redesign for its title character, the first Sonic the Hedgehog proved to be far more successful than many had likely expected, grossing $319.7 million worldwide and becoming the sixth-highest-grossing movie of the year. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to pick up with Sonic following the events of the first outing. Sonic has been living his life in Green Hills and is determined to make his mark as a hero. But, he has quickly grown bored with hiding and persuades his friends Tom and Maddie to let him house sit for them when they go on vacation. Of course, as soon as they leave, Doctor Eggman returns from the mushroom planet in search for the Master Emerald to conquer the world and exact revenge against Sonic with the help of Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Miles “Tails” Prower set out to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Ben Schwartz return as the voice of Sonic with the rest of the cast consisting of James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Idris Elba, and Jim Carrey.

Paramount evidently has a lot of faith in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to repeat the success of the first movie, and a third outing, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has now been confirmed. Director Jeff Fowler has previously teased his intentions for another sequel, revealing that he already has ideas.

“Even if somebody didn’t ask me to be thinking about ideas for future installments, it would be impossible not to. Even as we’re working through the visual effects and animation on this film, it’s impossible not to already get excited and to be starting to scheme about all the directions that the story could go, what new characters coming in, the impact that they could have. It’s the best part of the creative process when it’s just kind of a blank canvas and you can really just start to have blue sky ideas, even if, again, it’ not in an official capacity. If the request comes through to start laying the blueprints for another Sonic film, I will be armed and ready with all kinds of ideas. I would just love to get that opportunity.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 8, 2022
