A Snoop Dogg movie is in the works. Per THR, Snoop is partnering up with Universal Pictures to help give himself the biopic treatment. Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the new Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Ryan Coogler, is penning the script for the biopic. The film will be directed by Allen Hughes, who co-directed movies like Menace II Society and Dead Presidents with brother Albert before helming solo films such as Broken City and The Defiant Ones.
The news was also confirmed on Twitter by Universal Pictures with an announcement that reads, “What’s his name? Snoop Dooogggyyy Doooooggg. That’s right, we’re partnering with the Dogg Father himself Snoop Dogg to bring his legendary life-story to the big screen.”

With Snoop directly involved with the project, the biopic will feature the actual music from his catalog. The rapper and actor is serving as a producer for the film alongside Hughes and Sara Ramaker. He also released a statement noting that he’s been working on the biopic for a long time, but progress has only just begun as he has finally assembled a creative team he can trust with the project.
Snoop said, “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind. It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Snoop Dogg’s Life Story Is Heading to the Big Screen
Netflix
It’s a no-brainer for Snoop Dogg to be given a biopic, as he’s one of hip-hop’s most influential and successful performers of all time. He has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide since hitting the scene in the early 1990s. Snoop continues to make music with his 19th studio album, BODR, releasing earlier this year. As he has often appeared in movies and TV shows over himself over the years, frequently playing himself, Snoop has also become endeared to many fans unfamiliar with his hip-hop work. His rise to fame and continued success is something that can make for a great story told in a movie.
“Snoop Dogg is one of the most internationally beloved figures in hip-hop,” Hughes said of his desire to make a Snoop movie. “There’s just something about his energy that brings people of all walks of life together. Snoop Dogg, not just the artist, but the man and his brand, has transcended generations with his connection and appeal to audiences. His story is so authentic and utterly inspiring, and to have the opportunity to tell his story allows me to go back to the hood 30 years after Menace II Society, and say more now than I could then.”
It’s not yet clear when the Snoop Dogg biopic will begin filming, nor have any cast members yet been announced. A release date hasn’t yet been set.
