The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman looks a little frightened as he sits in his car with a gun in hand in the first look image from action movie maestro John Woo’s Silent Night. Unveiled courtesy of Variety, the image has lead star Joel Kinnaman no doubt preparing his weapon to enact his revenge in an action thriller that promises to be all action and little conversation. None, in fact, as Silent Night will reportedly have no dialogue.

Along with the image, some new information regarding Silent Night has also now been released, including Joel Kinnaman’s character’s name. The RoboCop star leads the movie as Godlock, “a father on a mission to avenge his young son who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Shot and nearly killed while in pursuit of the murderers, Godlock vows to avenge his son by any means necessary.” Sounds like exactly what John Woo’s action movie return requires.

With such a simple-yet-superb set up for an action flick, it certainly sounds like Silent Night won’t need many words to tell this tragic festive tale. Kinnaman’s revenge-fueled father will ask no questions whatsoever, instead dispatching his enemies mercilessly without a word. This concept should provide Silent Night with a hook that will appeal to action fans, with both director John Woo and star Joel Kinnaman no doubt finding creative ways to portray the emotion and tell the story.
Silent Night has now wrapped up principal photography, which took place in Mexico City, and stars Kid Cudi alongside Kinnaman. The rest of the core supporting cast is made up of Harold Torres and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
Silent Night Sees Face/Off Director John Woo Return to Hollywood After an Extended Absence
Paramount Pictures
Not only does Silent Night sound like the perfect, no-nonsense action movie, but it also marks the long-awaited return of Face/Off director John Woo, who has not been seen in Hollywood for almost two decades. His last venture was the action outing Paycheck starring Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman, which takes inspiration from the Phillip K. Dick short story. Paycheck follows Affleck as Michael, a reverse engineer, who suddenly finds himself pursued on charges of murder and treason. Suffering from amnesia, he is forced to piece together his past while on the run. The movie was sadly met with negative reviews upon release, and John Woo has not made a Hollywood project since.
Instead, the Hong Kong-based filmmaker has focussed on other projects outside the realm of Hollywood, including the likes of Red Cliff: Part I, Red Cliff: Part II, Reign of Assassins, The Crossing, The Crossing 2, and Manhunt. Of course, Woo is best known for helming such treasured action outings as Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, and Hard Boiled, among others.
Silent Night has not yet been given a release date, but a dialogue-free action movie with a pitch-perfect high-concept directed by John Woo and starring Run All Night and The Informer actor Joel Kinnaman certainly sounds like one to watch out for.
