Academy Award nominee and Puss in Boots star Antonio Banderas has teased the return of Shrek. Speaking with Deadline, Banderas has provided a surprisingly promising update on a possible Shrek 5, with the actor saying that the gruff-but-loveable ogre is “coming back.”

Introduced back in 2001 by DreamWorks Animation, Shrek is a bad-tempered but good-hearted ogre voiced by Mike Myers. Living in a world of kings, princesses, knights, and fairy tale creatures, Shrek perfectly parodies the many stories that begin “once upon a time…” while carving out its own identity as a fairy tale for the modern world.

“I’ve been with this cat for almost 20 years. The first time I did Puss In Boots, I was working on broadway, so I did my first session there. I’ve done five movies now. There is probably gonna be another, and Shrek is probably coming back.”

Shrek has been a huge success for Dreamworks, spawning several sequels in Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010). However, the last we saw of the character, he was waving to the boy on the moon as part of Dreamworks Animation’s new logo alongside the likes of The Bad Guys, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, and Po from Kung Fu Panda.

Word of a fifth Shrek movie has come and gone over the last few years, with nothing to show for it. But according to Banderas, that is all about to change.

Before the (possible) return of Shrek and Donkey, Antonio Banderas will reprise the role of Puss in Boots in the upcoming sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The notorious PiB embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws.
