The sequel to 2019 hit Shazam! is not due to hit theaters until next summer, but director David F. Sandberg has been giving an update on where the film is currently at, pointing out the biggest and clearer visual effects that fans can expect this time around. Shazam: Fury of The Gods will see Zachary Levi back as the title character, who this time will find himself and the rest of the Shazam family pitted against goddesses played by Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren and Rachel Zegler.

Although mostly known for independent shorts, as well as his work in the horror genre with Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, Sandberg made a big leap with Shazam!, and he is clearly wanting to make an even bigger impact with the sequel. In his new update, the director is seen all masked up as he watches the latest run off effects on the big screen, noting how this is the first movie he has directed where the footage was shot in 4K and did not have to be upscaled. He wrote, “Inspecting VFX shots on the big screen. This is the first feature I’ve directed that’s in proper 4K. Shot in 4.5K and finished in 4K. Previous films have been upscaled from either 2.8K or 3.4K.”

Like many comic book movies, Shazam! included a lot of special effects to bring the film to life on the big screen, in terms of giving Levi’s character his superhuman powers, breathing life into the movie’s villains and creating some epic and elaborate fight sequences. With the sequel expected to up the ante in terms of its visual display, there will certainly be a lot of effects for Sandberg to view as he continues to push the movie along towards its completion.

Shazam! Fury of The Gods will See The Characters Grow Up, and the Tone of the Movie Will Grow Up Too.

Shazam! featured a number of young teenagers who were transformed into superheroes but in the sequel, the kids aren’t kids anymore, and producer Peter Safran suggested that as the characters grow up, then so will many aspects of the storytelling in the new movie. He previously told IGN:

The movie has suffered a number of delays due to the Covid pandemic, and as well as filming being pushed back from 2020 to 2021, the original planned release date of this summer was also given a hefty shove to June 2023. However, this summer sees spin-off movie Black Adam arrive in cinemas, and while it is not believed there will be a crossover just yet between Shazam! and the Dwayne Johnson movie, there is a big chance of such a meeting being on the cards in the future.
