Superhero movies tend to have a way of generating rumors without having to do anything to instigate it, and it looks like the same has happened when it comes to Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which doesn’t hit cinemas until 2023 but has already seen the internet buzzing with talk of Zachary Levi’s titular hero being set to become a part of the new Justice League in the DCEU’s near future. However, one person who had something to say about that was director David F. Sandberg, who seems not to have been in the loop on this decision.
Responding to the surge of recent rumors about the future of the Justice League and who is likely to be part of it the next time Warner Bros. attempt to bring the superhero team together again. The original lineup we saw back in 2016 comprised of Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). While it looks like Momoa, Gadot, and Miller are planning on sticking around a little longer, the rest of the team have either already upped sticks and left or are preparing to do so in the next year after upcoming releases. So where does that leave the Justice League? According to Sandberg, possibly not where some fans have suggested.

Posting on his Twitter account, Sandberg said, “Shazam is joining the Justice League? 2022 starting out with some great news.” The comment was accompanied by a still from The Simpsons, with a doctored line of text reading, “Everything’s coming up Batson!” It also came in response to a series of tweets that claimed the new Justice League would be compromising of Shazam, Batgirl, and others. The original tweet in its entirety reads:
Sandberg did mention in another comment that he doesn’t know what is happening in The Flash, or even in Black Adam, which is part of the Shazam world, so his comments don’t completely pour water on the idea of a new Justice League being formed. As it stands, the DCEU is a bit of a mess when it comes to continuity, between the issues around the original Justice League film, the departure of Zack Snyder partway through his original five movie vision, and the haphazard way that many of the movies seemed to be released, so it would perhaps not be too far out there to think that Warner Bros. may want to completely clean the slate and in many ways begin again.
“I don’t usually tweet about DC stuff but I habe a friend who have seen The Flash and the movie will erase every movie Snyder has done. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League never happened now. Erased from continuity. Affleck and Cavill are both gone. Supergirl now the main Supes of Earth. Keaton is Batman and Batgirl will become the new Batman after her film. Movie ends with Flash and Supergirl and Shazam forming a new Justice League.”
While a lot of people will are sad that they will not be getting a solo Batfleck movie, and that Henry Cavill has now done with his role of Superman, the number of new possibilities opened up by erasing the old Justice League from the future could be a gamble that the studio will be happy to take a punt on.
