Going from one big franchise to another, Shawn Levy plans to follow up his work on Deadpool 3 and the final season of Stranger Things by taking the helm of a new Star Wars movie. Deadline reports that Levy is now in talks to direct a Star Wars film as soon as he wraps up his work on the aforementioned projects. No other information has yet been revealed about the project, such as who might be writing the screenplay or what the film might be about, though Levy confirmed the news with an excited post on Twitter.

“Childhood me is losing his shit right now. Grown-up me is too,” Levy said.

A primary producer of Stranger Things, Levy has also directed movies like Cheaper by the Dozen, Real Steel, and the Night at the Museum films. More recently, he’s been teaming up with Ryan Reynolds, having helmed the actor in Free Guy and The Adam Project. He’ll team back up with Reynolds alongside Hugh Jackman for the upcoming sequel Deadpool 3.

What’s Coming Next From Star Wars on the Big Screen?

With its shows on Disney+, the Star Wars franchise has consistently pumped out content, but there hasn’t been a movie to grace the big screen since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019. Other planned movies have had their own setbacks and it remains unclear exactly when the next Star Wars film will be released. Though, we can be sure that the Levy-directed movie will be sure to have a lot of attention from fans once that project makes some traction, given how much acclaim the filmmaker has been earning in recent years.

Meanwhile, Taika Waititi is also planning to direct a Star Wars movie, but progress has been slow-moving. He said in June that he wouldn’t be starting production in the near future, noting that he was still writing the screenplay. The film had previously been dated for a 2023 release, but that seems very unlikely at this point with no new progress made on the movie since then.

“I’m still writing,” Waititi told TheWrap. “I’m still coming up with the ideas and storylining it and just wanted to make sure that it feels like a Star Wars film. Because, I could say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll just write any old thing and set in space and then put Star Wars on the front.’ But it wouldn’t be a Star Wars film without certain elements and a certain treatment, so I’ve just got to make sure that it stays within that wheelhouse.”

Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins was also set to direct a Rogue Squadron film, but it was pulled from Disney’s release schedule in September. It was also recently reported that a secret Star Wars movie is in the works with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct with Damon Lindelof co-writing the screenplay.
