After the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Marvel movie is officially getting a sequel. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed and co-wrote the movie, has signed on to write and direct Shang-Chi 2. Of course, Simu Liu will also be back as the titular superhero, though it remains to be seen which other characters may return.

In a new interview with Collider, Cretton addressed the current status of Shang-Chi 2. The filmmaker admits he hasn’t started penning the screenplay just yet, but he’s “very excited” to get started on that soon. During the production of the first movie, Cretton and the Shang-Chi crew were always hoping for a sequel and even batting around ideas on the set.

Teasing what could happen in Shang-Chi 2, Destin Daniel Cretton also says that there were seeds planted in the first movie that could lead to bigger storylines in the sequel. As he’s currently in the brainstorming phase of crafting the story, there are no ideas set in stone at this time, but the plan is to figure out a specific path for the plot soon.

The filmmaker goes on to detail what it takes for him to make a successful movie, as we’ve seen with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which he also hopes to apply to the sequel.

Released to critical and financial success in September, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung. Cretton directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham.

Shang-Chi 2 doesn’t have an official release date at this time. You can read the full interview with Destin Daniel Cretton at Collider.
