Netflix has a whole host of original anime content in its library, but one of the most popular is Seven Deadly Sins. Hosting epic action sequences and comedic one-liners galore, the series is also known for having some heartfelt moments throughout its five-season and two-movie run. These moments are primarily driven forward by the various romances seen throughout the series.

Set in the fantastical realm of Liones, we see casts of characters representing different races, such as Humans, Demons, Giants, & Fairies. During the course of the show, we see forbidden love between demons and goddesses; a “will they or won’t they” story between a giant and a fairy, and royal affairs between a princess and her loyal knight. One can only imagine what tales of romance will come in the future. Here we’re going to look at the most prominent romantic storylines of the show and rank them, defining what the best romance of the Seven Deadly Sins truly was.

Zeldris is a powerful demon, being the son of the Demon King and brother to Meliodas. While his pure power is impressive, he had exceptional combat skills due to his extensive training with his brother and his own teacher, Cusack. Zeldris only ever wanted to impress his father and be like his older brother, but his attitude would begin to change when he met a member of the vampire clan, Gelda.

However, the burgeoning romance was not meant to be as Gelda and her people revolted against the Demon King. As punishment, the King ordered Zeldris to destroy the entire Vampire Clan. While Zeldris had always proven cold-hearted, he couldn’t bring himself to murder the woman he loved and instead decided to seal the entire clan away, hoping to protect them from his father’s wrath. After being released and reunited over 3,000 years later, Gelda has proven to be capable of tempering Zeldris’ fiery temper, even helping him mend his relationship with his brother.

5 Gilthunder & Margaret

Gilthunder had been in love with the royal princess, Margaret, for over ten years. He swore he would always protect her when he became a Holy Knight of Liones. This promise would lead him down a dark path. Once a young boy who dreamed of being as powerful, if not more so, than the Seven Deadly Sins. Gilthunder would grow to be a noble man, taking his duty to protect the kingdom and his love very seriously. But one day, he would grow privy to a plot involving evil forces taking the kingdom over from within. And to ensure Gilthunder remained silent, these forces cast a curse that would doom Margaret unless Gilthunder complied with their wishes.

As we are first introduced to Gilthunder on screen, it appears he has entirely given in to the will of evil, threatening to harm children and depriving townsfolk of their economic resources. He would even battle his idol, Meliodas, in multiple duels to the death. During one of these clashes, Meliodas would see the curse demon following Margaret and redirect his Divine Slayer attack at the said demon. With the demon destroyed, Gilthunder immediately made his true allegiance known, turning on his fellow Holy Knights and standing for justice once more. It takes a lot for a man such as Gilthunder to turn on his own morals for a time, and Meliodas knew that Gilthunder would never do such a thing if it were solely his life on the line. With his love free from immediate harm, Gilthunder would rejoin the fight for the kingdom, but not before embracing Margaret once more.

4 Escanor & Merlin

Escanor, the Lion’s Sin of Pride, has a tragic history of those he protects turning on him. Escanor’s ability allows him to grow in great strength, with the sun, reaching his peak at noon. As his strength grows, he becomes more proud and arrogant, losing control of his typical characteristics and lashing out at anyone that would dare try to control him. While Escanor would hurt those he would grow to care about, the endless cycle of fear and abandonment would end with the Seven Deadly Sins. Specifically, Merlin, the Pig’s Sin of Gluttony, a powerful magician who found great interest in Escanor. Escanor would grow infatuated with Merlin, citing that she was the first person not to be afraid of him and even to show an interest in him.

At one point, while Escanor was driven to his weakest point, having been severed from any sunlight, he would be forced to remember his past. Upon seeing Merlin in his memory, Escanor’s powers would begin to reactivate, stating that Merlin had always been a ray of sun in his life. While he wasn’t fighting, Escanor often wrote poetry with Merlin as a subject. And though this embarrassed him, Merlin was willing to indulge him and asked him to read her his poems. When Escanor was on his death bed, burning to nothing, he stated that he knew Merlin would never return his romantic feelings and that he was happy, regardless of having gotten to spend time with her. Merlin would suffer significant burns to her face as she kissed Escanor before he died, stating it was a gift to the one man that had truly loved her.

3 King & Diane

Diane, the Snake’s Sin of Envy & King, the Grizzly’s Sin of Sloth, are a giant and a fairy, respectively. Due to the naturally long lifespan of their species, theirs is a love story that spans over 700 years. Their meeting with one another came at a time when both were facing significant losses. King had just found evidence that his best friend had been murdered and was struck down by a man looking to harvest King’s wings. The injuries would cause King to forget his identity as a King and guardian of the fairies and the Sacred Tree. He would be discovered by Diane, a young giant who disagreed with the elders on the Giant Clan’s attitude towards fighting. Diane wished to be more pacifist, with violence being an option but not the only one.

These two would grow close over the span of 500 years, with Diane eventually asking King if he loved her. When King confirmed his feelings, Diane would ask him to promise he would always love her. King would make this promise. Shortly after, King would regain his memories of responsibility and erase Diane’s memories, wishing to spare her from harm. Despite this, King held on to his promise, loving Diane even over the course of centuries, even though she didn’t fully regain her memories until they were in the precursor of a Holy War.

2 Meliodas & Elizabeth

Meliodas & Elizabeth is a twist on Romeo & Juliet, with Meliodas, the son of the Demon King, and Elizabeth, the reincarnation of a goddess Meliodas had fallen in love with. Elizabeth, being the daughter of the Supreme Deity, had tremendous holy power. As the war between the Demon Clan & the Goddess Clan raged, the Demon King & Supreme Deity could only agree that their children needed to be punished for rebelling. And so, the Demon King cast a curse on Elizabeth. She would be reincarnated in human form, meet Meliodas, fall in love with him, and die. This process would begin over and over again, with Meliodas’ lifespan as a demon ensuring it would go on for centuries.

The torture Meliodas faced as he had to witness the love of his life die would drive him to madness. But in the end, he couldn’t avoid it as his love never wavered even as he watched her die 106 times. And even though Elizabeth was cursed, she confirmed that she would fall in love with Meliodas over and over again, no matter the cost. This unwavering love would propel Meliodas, alongside his friends, to finally defeat his father and end the curse that had haunted the couple’s romance for over 3,000 years.

1 Ban & Elaine

After King lost his memory, the role of guardian to the Sacred Tree went to his sister, Elaine. Elaine would fiercely protect the Tree’s Fountain of Youth, as many human bandits would maliciously attempt to steal it. Ban tries to drink from the fountain, but when Elaine explains that the forest would die without the water, he ceases his attempts to steal it. Over the course of seven days, Ban, having grown disillusioned with humanity, elects to stay and get to know Elaine. During this time, the two grow close, with their friendship becoming more intimate. Elaine even admits that she wishes Ban would take her away from the forest, so they could travel together. Knowing her responsibility, Ban promises he will find Elaine’s brother so she can leave the forest.

Before this could happen, the forest would be attacked by a demon, attempting to burn the forest to the ground while stealing the water. Ban asks Elaine to take the water and run while he stays behind. The demon makes quick worth of both of them, however, and while Ban initially refuses to drink the water, Elaine sacrifices herself to make sure he drinks it, giving him one last kiss. Ban’s love for Elaine wouldn’t end with her death. Thanks to the power of the water, Ban became the immortal Fox’s Sin of Greed and would devote himself to bringing Elaine back. This undying devotion would endear Ban to fans of the show, making his character arc one of the most emotionally riveting.
