In the upcoming Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, the musician and actress is getting candid about her mental health struggles. Ahead of the documentary’s premiere on Apple TV+ tomorrow, Selena Gomez discussed the film with Rolling Stone. Gomez, who lives with bipolar disorder, has been to mental health facilities multiple times and at her lowest, contemplated suicide. Of the impending release of the film, she tells the publication:

For Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, Gomez worked with filmmaker Alek Keshishian. The two collaborated on her 2015 Hands to Myself video. Initially, Gomez was interested in doing a concert tour documentary film. At the time, she was doing the Revival musical tour, but that was canceled so that she could attend treatment. The shift focused on providing a more in-depth look at Gomez’s personal life and the impacts of mental illness.

“I’m just so nervous. Because I have the platform I have, it’s kind of like I’m sacrificing myself a little bit for a greater purpose. I don’t want that to sound dramatic, but I almost wasn’t going to put this out. God’s honest truth, a few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure I could do it.”

Sharing an Important Story

Gomez knows that bringing awareness to the plight of mental disorders is needed, but that doesn’t mean it’s been easy for her to share her story. In fact, she even questioned if she was the correct figure to address it:

Although understandably hesitant to share such intimate details of her life, Gomez knew that she could reach others by releasing the film. Following a screening, Gomez noted the audience reaction, and acknowledged that if she “could do that for one person,” she should go for it. Gomez, who has been a constant fixture in the limelight for more than a decade, also discussed her plans once she concludes promotion for the film:

“I know it has a big message, but am I the right person to bring it to light? I don’t know. I wanted someone to say, ‘Selena, this is too intense.’ But everyone was like, ‘I’m really moved, but are you ready to do this? And are you comfortable?’”

Selena Gomez currently stars in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building alongside iconic comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short. For the last three years, she has spearheaded HBO Max’s cooking series Selena + Chef. It was recently announced that she would work on a reboot of the 1980s comedy Working Girl.

“This is probably the most you’ll hear about me for a while. I want this to come out, but I also want this behind me. Every now and then it’s important to just disappear.”
