Not to be confused with the Australian TV series of the same name. Secret Daughter is a story following two women, one from India and the other from the United States, whose lives get interconnected when one adopts the other woman’s child. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming film.

Secret Daughter: The Plot

As mentioned earlier, the Secret Daughter movie will be the adaptation of the book with the same name. The novel was released back in 2010 and is the debut novel of Shilpi Somaya Gowda, a New York Times and internationally bestselling Canadian-Indian author. Gowda is the author of two other novels, The Golden Son, which was published in 2015, and The Shape of Family, which was published in 2019. All of her books have won multiple awards.

The storyline of Secret Daughter spans 20 years. The novel follows the fate of two families who are mysteriously connected by an adopted daughter. Somer, which will be played by Sienna Miller, is a newlywed and a well-to-do physician whose life seems almost perfect. However, she soon decides to adopt a baby girl as soon as she learns the crushing discovery that she will no longer be able to bear children due to early menopause. She adopts a baby girl named Asha from an Indian orphanage.

Asha is Kavita’s biological daughter. Kavita, who will be played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, is a poor villager who decides to give Asha up for adoption because she is afraid that her daughter will endure the same fate her first daughter did after she was murdered for being born a girl. The story follows the independent but forever connected journeys of Somer, Kavita, and Asha, and the women are put to the test when Asha turns older and wins a prestigious journalism internship that takes her to Bombay, where she sets out to rediscover her roots.

This New York Times Bestseller has been translated into more than 30 languages and has sold more than a million copies all over the world. The author, Shilpi Somaya Gowda, came up with the idea for Secret Daughter while she spent her time volunteering at an Indian orphanage as an undergraduate. The book has received global praise for its beautiful storytelling and the realistic portrayal of Indian culture.

Where Will We See Priyanka Chopra Jonas & Sienna Miller Next?

As far as what is next for these two leading ladies, Priyanka Chopra has several projects in the pipeline. The former Miss World will be seen alongside Richard Madden in Citadel. The movie is rumored to be an action-packed spy series with compelling emotional angles. She will also be seen alongside Sam Heughan and Celine Dion in Text For You. The actor continues to keep one foot in Bollywood as well, as we will be seeing her along with mega Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt in Jee Le Zaraa (Live a Little). That film will be directed by Farhan Akhtar.

Sienna Miller will soon be seen in an upcoming British anthology drama series titled Anatomy of a Scandal as Sophie Whitehouse. The series was developed by Melissa James Gibson and David E. Kelley and will be dropped on the streaming giant Netflix. The show will be based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan. The new Netflix series is scheduled to premiere on April 15, 2022, and will consist of six episodes.
