The latest Scream TV spot ups the ante on the horror and chaos the franchise is known for. The 30-second clip features some new footage, and it is absolutely insane. Ghostface is seen in a metallic mask, using a flamethrower to possibly claim his next victim. You can check out the new Scream TV spot titled “Not this movie, Sidney!” below.

Released by the Youtube channel, Hello Sidney, the clip teases the most unhinged Ghostface yet. In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, we can see Ghostface sporting a metallic mask and wielding a flamethrower. We’ve seen him utilize knives, guns, gas, or the old throw-em-off-the-balcony method to kill his victims, but never a flamethrower. But don’t get too excited. The Scream franchise is known for its misleading marketing.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Ghostface in a metallic mask and killing with a flamethrower sounds too good to be true and could be another misdirection from the filmmakers. Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett went to great lengths to keep the identity of the killer secret. They even handed out multiple scripts to actors and shot different endings. A big moment like Ghostface donning a metallic mask wouldn’t have been revealed just a month away from the film’s release. It’s too good of a reveal to waste like this. And that brings to mind the Stab films, which exist within the Scream franchise. Could a flamethrower wielding Ghostface be part of a Stab sequel? Guess we’ll find out when Scream premieres on January 14, 2022.

The upcoming Scream is the fifth movie in the titular slasher franchise created by horror legend Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson. The Scream films are known for their dark comedy, extreme violence, and satirizing horror movie tropes. 1996’s Scream is considered one of the greatest horror movies and is known for reinvigorating the slasher film genre. Scream follows a high school girl who becomes the target of a psychopathic killer known as Ghostface. The character appeared in three more Scream films, which were just as successful, if not as good as the first one.

After the demise of Wes Craven in 2015, plans for more Scream films were put on hold until 2020, when Paramount officially announced a fifth Scream movie (titled Scream). Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have helmed the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Scream is billed as a franchise relaunch but isn’t a proper reboot. Instead, it tells an original story, honoring the earlier films while also appealing to modern audiences. The plot synopsis for Scream reads, “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

Scream marks the return of franchise regulars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks from Scream 4. They are joined by franchise newcomers Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar. Be ready to see Ghostface kill again when Scream releases in theaters on January 14, 2022.
