Scott Derrickson is known for his work in the horror genre, delivering several truly terrifying experiences to audiences. In 2005, he directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose and improved upon his craft in 2012 with Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke. Two years later, Derrickson would return to the genre with Deliver Us from Evil, following a New York police officer who joins forces with an unconventional priest to combat possessions that terrorize the city.

Derrickson also helmed the 2016 Marvel film Doctor Strange. The filmmaker was set to direct the second installment, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness; however, he stepped away from the project, citing creative differences between himself and Marvel Studios and a flurry of mental health issues the director wished to focus on.

His latest outing, The Black Phone, may be his best work yet. The film, adapted from the short story of the same name by Joe Hill, follows Finney Blake (Mason Thames), a 13-year-old boy who is abducted by a sadistic killer known as The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). When Finney is trapped in a soundproof basement, the boy begins to use a phone on the wall that can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. At the heart of the story is the relationship between Finney and his sister (Madeleine McGraw), who desperately seeks to find her lost brother. The Black Phone was received positively from fans and critics, with MovieWeb calling the film a ‘great, violent thriller.’

Scott Derrickson Has No Shortage of Work Coming His Way

Following the release of The Black Phone, fans began speculating on future projects Derrickson could be a part of. Now, the filmmaker is teasing the abundance of work ahead of him. During an interview with DiscussingFilm, the director said, ‘I’ll definitely be busy for the next couple of years.’ Derrickson mentions several TV shows, an event film, and another horror movie on his upcoming slate.

There was nearly a 6-year gap between Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, and Derrickson is assuring fans that won’t happen again. With the amount of work the director has lined up, audiences should expect his name to appear far more often than in the last few years.

“I can’t talk specifically about what I’m going to do, but I can say that I’ve got a number of things. I’ve got two television shows. I’ve got a big event movie. I’ve got another horror film. I’ve got a number of things that are all pretty close and ready to go. I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do next, or in what order, but I’ve got a lot of work lined up. I’ll definitely be busy for the next couple of years. There was a big gap in time between Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, and this isn’t going to be like that.”
