Apple TV+ wants more Schmigadoon!, as the unique comedy series has officially been renewed for a second season. Starring Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong, the six-episode freshman season aired last summer before concluding in August and has been on the bubble with no official word of a renewal up to this point. The renewal is obviously fantastic news for those who enjoyed the first season, which garnered an 88% fresh score at Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, Schmigadoon! is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Paul also serves as series showrunner and wrote the songs for the series, as the show serves as a throwback to classic Golden Age musicals. In the series, Key and Strong play two New York doctors with relationship issues who stumble across a magical town called Schmigadoon, a town perpetually trapped in a 1940s-style musical, and they cannot leave the town until they find true love.

Per Variety, Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page have also joined the cast for the upcoming season 2. The new season will put Key and Strong in the town of Schmicago which pays homage to 60s and 70s musicals. Returning cast members alongside Key and Strong include Ariana DeBose, Kristin Chenoweth, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, and Aaron Tveit.

Schmigadoon! Was an Easy Sell for Cecily Strong

This series has captured the attention of many because of its unique premise. For one of its lead stars, Cecily Strong, it was not a difficult decision to jump on board the cast for Schmigadoon!, a role that she knew she wanted to be a part of immediately.

“Number one, I loved the show,” Strong previously told Collider. “I love it from a fan’s perspective. Right away, I was all in. I’m the easiest audience for this show, so I’m a big fan girl for it. And then, getting to be in it, of course, is it’s own thing. I got to live that life. What’s also really special about this show is that, if you’re maybe somebody who doesn’t think they love musicals, it’s nice to have a show that’s got great visual effects and the comedy is a way in. There’s always a way in. We’re trying to give something to everybody, which I think a great musical does anyway.”

On her favorite song from season 1, Strong added, “Obviously, the last number I get to do was really, really special to me. I remember the first time we rehearsed the choreography, Chris Gattelli filmed it for us. I was still trying to learn the other dances and Keegan came in and knew it so well, the first time we did it. It made us all think, ‘This is really special, and it’s amazing that we just did that,’ because he and I are both not dancers. And then, a number that I love that I’m not part of is my favorite number, probably of all time, is Ariana [DeBose]’s tap number with the kids. I think it’s so funny and so much fun. Even the types of dance that they do, it’s so much fun.”
