The Saw franchise appeared to have reached its conclusion with Saw III, then again with Saw VII: The Final Chapter. After continuing with 2017’s Jigsaw and 2021 standalone installment Spiral: From the Book of Saw, we are now awaiting Saw 10. The tenth movie in the gore-loving franchise will see the return of Tobin Bell as John “Jigsaw” Kramer, and according to a post by the movie’s writer, filming is now complete on the film.

Currently, Saw 10 has no official title, but it is believed that the sequel will actually serve as a prequel to the original movies in the franchise. Tobin Bell’s character originally died in the final scenes of Saw III, but has continued to appear in numerous flashback sequences through the franchise, building out a backstory of John Kramer and the reasons behind his sadistic pastime. Another franchise returnee is thought to be Shawnee Smith, who is expected to return as Amanda Young, one of Kramer’s prodigies. In a post shared by Josh Stolberg, the writer said:

Is There Really a Reason For a 10th Saw Movie?

     Lionsgate

The original release of Saw was a revelation in low-budget horror, with a clever script, a twist that no one saw coming and moderate level of violence. Saw II and Saw III continued in a similar vein, with Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw at the center of the story and everything pretty much being neatly tied up with a bloody bow by the end of it. The death of Jigsaw could have meant the end of the franchise, but of course that is not how it works, especially in the world of horror movies.

Subsequent entries in the franchise abandoned the clever storylines and instead began to focus on making the deaths of its expendable characters more and more brutal and elaborate, until by the seventh movie that is all that was left. An attempt to tie the franchise back to its roots came off heavy-handed and obvious, and that saw the film’s reviews struggle to make it into double figures. However, the films continued to make a profit and that led to even more sequels.

Now, Tobin Bell is back in Saw 10, after sitting out Spiral, but the question of whether there is really any more story about Jigsaw to be told is something that will become clear when Saw 10 heads to cinemas in October 2023. Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules previously discussed their excitement to be working with Tobin Bell on the latest Saw installment. In a statement they said:

Saw 10 will be released on October 27, 2023.

“What a thrill to be reuniting with Tobin. His performance as John Kramer is part of the magic that made this franchise a phenomenon and his character is an active part of this film."
