Saturday Night Live is well-known for parodying news events. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter during their December 17th episode, the SNL cast decided to use their cold open to spoof Donald Trump’s most recent announcement. During the former President’s announcement earlier this week, Trump stated that he would be selling NFTs or, as he called them, “Trump Digital Trading Cards.” In his video announcement, the ex-president described his NFTs (which reportedly sold out on the first day) as “pertaining to my life and career.” The NFTs portray Trump as an astronaut, cowboy, race car driver, and superhero.

In the SNL cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Trump began the skit by addressing the news before quoting the actual video. “This is Donald Trump, hopefully, your favorite president of all time, better than Lincoln, better than Washington,” Johnson stated as Trump before adding, “frankly, better than Ezra.”

Johnson’s Trump continued, “You may have seen this week, I made a major announcement, I’m doing my first official collection of Donald J. Trump Digital Trading Cards — or to use the technical term, ’nifties’… because they are so neat,” the comedian stated mispronouncing NFTs. “Trump cards are each $99. Seems like a lot, seems like a scam, and in many ways it is,” he said. “You can also get them for free by going online and looking at it.”

James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump Mocked the Former President on SNL

Johnson additionally said, “You get me as a cowboy or me melting Biden’s ice cream with my big laser eyes.” This statement references the opening of the real former president’s video, which showed Trump portrayed as a superhero with laser beams coming out of his eyes.

SNL then went on to mock the NFT cards by showing the former President various humorous situations like the famous bullet-dodging scene in The Matrix, Trump doing the splits, and even showing the former President as Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. “Wow, look at the legs on her,” he stated. “Perhaps I would be dating her if she weren’t me.”

Johnson’s Trump continued on, calling his son, Donald Trump Jr., his “third least embarrassing child.” The faux Trump Jr. (played by Mikey Day) then promoted Trump’s new NFTs along with a new Christmas CD by his fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle (played by Cecily Strong). Strong’s Guilfoyle declared that the album was called NOW That’s What No One Calls Music before breaking into lyrics from “Silent Night, Holy Night,” which were, naturally, off-key.

As the Day’s Trump Jr. and Strong’s Guilfoyle left the stage as Johnson’s Trump stated, “There they go. What a terrible couple.”

The skit concluded with Trump sharing his Christmas and saying, “Merry Christmas, OK? We’re all saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again, right? I brought that back. Because Christmas is very important to Christians, and to Jewish, I think, also.”
