During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote her role in the upcoming Paramount+ series Wolf Pack, Sarah Michelle Gellar also spoke about her short-lived series Ringer. While reflecting on her old show, the actor revealed that Ringer was initially meant to be very different and explained why the show came to a quick end.

The CW drama series Ringer first premiered back in September 2011. The series starred Gellar as Bridget Kelly, a recovering drug addict who flees from her native Wyoming after she witnesses a murder. Bridget then heads to New York to seek out her estranged twin sister (also played by Gellar). However, after Bridge learns that her sister, Siobhan, committed suicide, Bridget takes over her sister’s identity and lives among New York’s elite. In addition to Gellar, the cast also included Ioan Gruffudd, Nestor Carbonell, Zoey Deutch, Kristoffer Polaha, Mike Colter, and Tara Summers.

While chatting with THR, Gellar reflected on the short-lived series and disclosed that the soapy twin saga was initially pitched as a miniseries for CBS. However, at the time, miniseries didn’t hold the same weight that they do today, and as such, Gellar was told that Ringer would need at least 22 episodes to be successful. The Buffy star also noted that Ringer season 2 had been on the table and revealed why a second installment never took place.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Was Told Ringer Needed ‘22 Episodes to Make a Profit’

Gellar said, “After I had my daughter, the first show I chose to do was Ringer … thinking, ‘Oh, this will be easy. I’ll play twins.’ I don’t know where my head was. I blame postpartum. All the networks said, ‘There’s no money in limited. You need 22 episodes to make a profit,’ I got pregnant with my second child, which was a surprise, so I turned to CW like, ‘I can’t.’ They would’ve picked it up again. I just couldn’t do it.”

While Ringer’s time on television may have been short, Gellar’s upcoming series Wolf Pack is set to debut on Jan. 26. The show is based on books by Edo Van Belkom. The storyline centers around teenagers Everett (played by Armani Jackson) and Blake (played by Bella Shepard), whose lives are changed forever after a California wildfire awakens a horrifying creature. After the teens are injured during an attack, the duo find themselves drawn toward one another and drawn to a pair of fraternal twins that experienced similar circumstances.

Teen Wolf executive producer Jeff Davis created the new series, but even though Wolf Pack deals with the supernatural, it is not considered a Teen Wolf spinoff. Instead, Wolf Pack will take place in a different universe with its own set of rules. On Wolf Pack, Gellar will play Kristin Ramsey, a well-regarded arson investigator. Her character is brought in by authorities to try and catch the teen arsonist who started the wildfire. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer on the series.
