Star Sarah Michelle Gellar recently revealed that she doesn’t regret turning down major movie roles for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actor’s admission comes as the star makes her return to the small screen with the new Paramount+ series Wolf Pack. In the show, Gellar plays arson expert Kristin Ramsey. Gellar’s return to television has also revived talk about the star’s talent as a performer and her lack of recognition in terms of awards and prominent movie roles.
During Gellar’s interview with The Guardian, it is noted that the Cruel Intentions star has had to turn down some major movie offers due to her role as a lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s stated that Gellar had to pass on films like David Fincher’s Fight Club, Sam Mendes’ American Beauty, and the rom-com The Wedding Planner. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese even considered the actor for the role of Jenny Everdeane in Gangs of New York (Cameron Diaz ultimately claimed the role). Still, despite missing out on other entertainment projects, Gellar stated that she doesn’t regret her choices.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Says, ‘I Love What I Do’
Sony Pictures Releasing
Gellar told the Guardian, “My mom was a single mother, working just above the poverty line, and I got to travel the world, to see and do things that would never have been afforded to me.” Besides, she adds, she is a workhorse by nature. “I love what I do – which is work, work, work.”
Still, Gellar’s impressive work ethic ultimately led the star to self-admitted burnout." After the passing of her The Crazy Ones co-star Robin Williams, Gellar decided to take a break. She said, “When we lost Robin, it was this whole reset for me: ‘Everything’s going by really fast, and I’m missing it. When I did the pilot for The Crazy Ones, my son was two months old – it was nonstop, and I needed to be at home for a while.”
Still, the actor knew that stepping back was a risky choice to make. “Your job may not always be there,” Gellar stated. “You can be surpassed by other people; interests change. When you are mid- to late 30s in this business, and you look young like I do, you’re not getting the meaty wife or mother roles, because you don’t look old enough – but you’re too old for the ingenue. It’s a weird position to be in.”
Nowadays, the actor says that her goal is to take on a couple of projects per year (acting and producing). She said that when her children reach college age, “I feel that that’s the full-full throttle. I love what I do, and I’m really loving it in a different and much more joyous way.”
Gellar added, “I didn’t dream of success like this, so now I’m in the fun phase where it’s all gravy. I’ve been on all the magazine covers, I have awards, all that stuff – I want to just have fun.”
