With Red Notice breaking records on Netflix and probably in line for a sequel, Black Adam in the can and heading to cinemas next year to usher in a possible franchise of its own and Jungle Cruise heading down the river again at Disney, you would think that Dwayne Johnson might want to take it easy for a little while. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as his Seven Bucks production team is already setting their sights on a number of future projects, including new stories and a return to some old properties, of which 2015’s San Andreas appears to be one.
The Johnson starring disaster movie was a huge hit in 2015 and an announcement of a sequel being in production was made soon after in February of 2016. By 2020, it was believed that the main cast was still interested in returning, and in July this year, it was reported that a draft of the script was done but due to the length of time since the original announcement that it would not be moving ahead as the executive overseeing the project had left New Line, who were producing. Now, Hiram Garcia, head of production at Seven Bucks has revealed that there are definitely ideas for a continuation of the franchise being discussed. As Garcia tells Screen Rant:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
While there are plenty of fans of Dwayne Johnson would happily watch him in a sequel to any of his movies, disaster movies very rarely need a sequel as when you have seen someone battling against one earthquake you have seen them all. With so much else piling up on the Black Adam star’s plate, there will have to be some projects that end up falling by the wayside, and while there is clearly a desire for Garcia and his team to come up with a sequel to San Andreas, there are many more ideas also being banded around for Johnson to choose from.
Currently, Johnson’s new movie, Red Notice, has become the most-watched original Netflix movie in the streamer’s history, and even a host of negative critical reviews just cannot stop The Rock when he is on a roll. Whichever projects come his way next are certainly not going to produce a box office bomb, and whether that is a San Andreas sequel or a brand new venture is not going to make a difference to the execs behind it, as they know wherever Johnson goes, his fans will always turn up for the show.
