Darkman has always been one of those movies that never quite gained the credit it deserved. Having become something of a cult classic, the Sam Raimi movie has always been touted by its fans as a film that needs another sequel. Recently the movie’s lead, Liam Neeson, commented that he would be willing to consider returning to the role. However, it seemed at the time that he could be jokingly saying it without expecting a sequel to happen. However, according to Raimi, the sequel is very much alive and kicking at Universal.

Darkman was released in 1990, and as you would expect, it picked up on some of the vibes surrounding Tim Burton’s release of Batman, but it didn’t make the same box office impact as that movie. The film starred Neeson as Dr. Peyton Westlake, a man who is disfigured and seeks out vengeance on those who caused his injuries. The movie fell into the trap of subsequently releasing two direct-to-video sequels, which saw Liam Neeson being replaced with Arnold Vosloo and Raimi dropping to producer only. Since then, the franchise has remained mostly dormant on screen other than a poorly received TV pilot.

While on the promotional tour for Multiverse of Madness, Raimi was asked about the rumored Darkman sequel and whether he would be returning to direct it. Although he certainly didn’t commit to that, Raimi gave a very positive comment for those awaiting the return of violent vigilante. He told The Wrap:

“Universal is talking about a Darkman sequel. There’s a producer attached. I haven’t heard the story yet or gone into it, I’ve been so busy with (Doctor Strange). But I think it’s cool.”

When Sam Raimi took over the reins of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there was always a question of exactly how the director would put his stamp on the movie. As it turns out, he has done that through his horror routes, as well as his love of a Bruce Campbell cameo. From early on in Multiverse of Madness, Raimi’s touch is clear to see, and as he previously alluded to, there is a lot for fans of the Evil Dead to enjoy in this movie, with some very nice touches bringing some dark fun to the MCU.

Outside of the Doctor Strange sequel, Raimi has now been talked about in the same circles as a fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie, which fans have been wanting for a long time. With Maguire having reprised his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and original Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst also expressing an interest in returning as MJ, there is now a question of whether Raimi could find himself bringing back some of his older franchises in a time when nostalgic legacy sequels is at an all-time high. Later his year sees the release of Evil Dead Rise, which Raimi has produced, and there is no doubt that with both Darkman and Spider-Man sequels circulating, we could be seeing Raimi back in either of these franchises soon.
