While many of us know Brendan Fraser for his role in the action-adventure trilogy, The Mummy, and his slapstick comedies such as Encino Man and George of the Jungle, younger audiences likely haven’t had a chance to see any of his classic movies during his heyday. That includes Sadie Sink, who admitted she hadn’t seen any Brendan Fraser movies until she was cast as his daughter in the upcoming A24 drama, The Whale. While talking with Variety during the New York City premiere of The Whale, Sink explained that she watched every movie Brendan Fraser was in after acting alongside him:

Sink also said that School Ties was her favorite Fraser film, which was one of his first-ever roles. In the movie, he plays a working-class Jewish student who lands an athletic scholarship at an elite prep school. He finds out that many of his new classmates are antisemitic, however, and has to hide his ethnicity to fit in.

“To be honest, I hadn’t seen any of his films. I didn’t grow up with his films… Of course, now I’ve seen all of them.”

Brendan Fraser has recently been making a comeback in acting. He starred in a plethora of dramas, comedies, and action movies throughout the 90s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, he began receiving fewer roles after some debilitating injuries from performing his own stunts, expensive alimony payments from a rough divorce, and allegedly being blacklisted from Hollywood after speaking up about sexual assault he suffered from the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Sadie Sink and Brendan Fraser Loved Working With Each Other

Brendan Fraser gave a lot of praise to his co-star, calling Sink’s performance “breathtaking.” She is well-known for her role in the Netflix series Stranger Things, which had its fourth season premiere earlier this year. Sink similarly had great things to say about Fraser, regarding him as “probably my favorite human on the planet.” While The Whale is the only film they’ve made together so far, it won’t be surprising if they work with each other again in the future.

The film already received a warm reception when Brendan Fraser got a six-minute-long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival premiere. In the film, Fraser portrays an obese man who turns to binge-eating after his gay lover passes away. He tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter, played by Sink.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale will be released in theaters everywhere on Dec. 9. It stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, and Ty Simpkins. It is based on a play of the same name, written by Samuel D. Hunter, who also wrote the screenplay for the movie. A24 will distribute the film.
