For someone who is currently meant to be taking a break, Ryan Reynolds seems to be making more appearances now than he has in the last year. As well as his numerous Instagram and Twitter posts, celebrating the recent 6th anniversary of Deadpool’s release in cinemas and appearing in trailers for the upcoming The Adam Project, the famous actor also appeared in a Super Bowl ad, although you may not have noticed it. In the McDonald’s spot, which featured cameos by NASCAR star Bubba Wallace, FIFA Twitch streamer Edwin Castro and Kanye West, the restaurant’s iconic character Grimace popped out, and he was voiced by none other than… Mr. Ryan Reynolds.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
While the unexpected appearance would likely have gone unnoticed, Reynolds is not one to allow these things to pass by without some kind of fanfare. In a cheeky little Twitter post on his Aviation American Gin account, Reynolds replied to McDonalds asking, “Uhhh… the voice of Grimace sounds oddly familiar. Did [McDonalds] hire a certain Canadian drink-slinging McRiblet?” Responding to that message using his own personal account, Reynolds said, “Yes. Confirmed. It’s called range.”
To add to the moment and ensure everyone is aware that this is not just Reynolds pulling legs, McDonalds replied to the original tweet saying, “Where do you keep ur grimace suit.”
The McDonalds Super Bowl Ad saw a number of “customers” being unable to make a decision about what to choose from the menu, whether in the restaurant, sitting at the drive-thru or ordering online. If you missed the ad, then you can see many people saying “Can I get Uhhhhhhh…” below, including Reynolds’s stint as Grimace, who even after all these still seems to have trouble choosing what to get from the array of burgers and wraps on offer at the fast-food chain.
Ryan Reynolds Is as Much a Marketing Machine as He is Actor
While there is no denying Ryan Reynolds’ popularity as an actor, from his early TV roles in such shows as Two Guys and a Girl, through his early movie roles in National Lampoon’s Van Wilder and Blade Trinity all the way to Deadpool, Free Guy and Red Notice, he has also made a pretty big impact as a marketing genius. With his own brands such as Aviation American Gin, his production company Maximum Effort, and Mint Mobile among others, Reynolds has proven himself to be a very astute businessman and his mastery of social media is more than capable of producing some decent promotions to catch attention. This has included a recent video for Mint Mobile in which Reynolds read his version of Winnie The Pooh following A.A. Milne’s original stories falling into the public domain.
Taking on the role of Grimace in McDonalds’s Super Bowl ad, and then making his “big reveal” of his involvement, is just another little trick of Reynolds to get attention for both McDonalds and for his Aviation American Gin brand in one easy swoop. It also isn’t the only time he has used McDonalds in his promotion for the gin company, having last year promoted the McRib by creating the “Aviation Gin Riblet” cocktail, in a video that ended with his calling on McDonalds to “bring back Grimace.” It looks like he not only got his wish, but hand a hand in the purple blob’s return as well.
