Ryan Reynolds has shared the concerns that troubled him while making the first Deadpool movie. Though Deadpool was a huge hit and gave Reynolds a life-changing opportunity in his career, his early stint with the character had kept him in doubt about the film.

Deadpool wasn’t Ryan Reynolds’ first attempt at playing Marvel Comics character, Wade Wilson. He appeared alongside Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber in the X-Men Trilogy prequel, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film, however, was heavily panned by critics for several aspects, and much of the disappointment from fans was aimed at Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool. The film revamped Deadpool to fit the movie and removed vital character traits depicted in the comics. X-Men Origins’ Deadpool wasn’t humorous, his representation wasn’t accurate to the source, and he didn’t break the fourth wall. To add up to the disaster, they stitched his mouth even though his ‘Merc with a Mouth’ attitude was what made him famous.

So, when Fox Studios decided to reboot Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds became skeptical for a while about doing the role again, knowing that the audience won’t give him another chance to make things right. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds, talking about his biggest fear in making Deadpool, said,

Between X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Deadpool, Reynolds also ventured over to DC Comics via Green Lantern (2011), which was a major commercial and critical failure. So, to venture into the comic book genre was genuinely a concern for Reynolds at the time.

“I’d been in the comic book arena before to no real success, and I thought, ‘Wow if this doesn’t work, I’m going to let people down.’ That was my biggest fear was just letting folks down who loved this character.”

Deadpool eventually became a massive success, earning Reynolds a Golden Globe nomination and successfully reviving the Deadpool Series within the X-Men Films universe. A sequel to the film was released in 2018, and the character isn’t resting anytime soon.

After Disney acquired Fox Studios and gained copyrights to adaptations of X-Men under Marvel Studios, Deadpool was the first film to find a place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios is developing Deadpool 3, with Reynolds reprising his role. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the film.

Meanwhile, Reynolds has given several hits like 6 Underground, The Adam Project, and Free Guy. On the latter two, he worked with director Shawn Levy, who is set to direct Deadpool 3 for Marvel Studios.

The third Deadpool movie will mark the character’s official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s shared continuity. Marvel Studios is also developing a film on ‘The Mutants,’ which shall share space with Deadpool 3. The film has no release date but may be a part of the franchise’s Phase Six slate.

Deadpool 3 would not be the last of Reynolds’ stint as the ‘Merc with Mouth,’ and fans are already eager to see him throw punches and punchlines.
