Peacock has pulled the plug on Rutherford Falls. Per Variety, it has just been announced that the comedy series has been canceled after a two season run with no plans for a third season in the works. The season 2 finale, which hit Peacock along with the season’s other seven episodes in June, now serves as the series finale.
It’s not exactly clear why the show was canceled, but it could be because viewership numbers on Peacock just weren’t as high as NBCUniversal had been hoping for. For what it’s worth, the series had garnered critical acclaim during its brief run, scoring a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. Season 2 fared even better by acquiring a rare perfect 100% score. Getting canceled despite the praise may suggest that there just weren’t enough people watching to justify ordering a third season.

Created by Ed Helms, Michael Schur, and Sierra Teller Ornelas, Rutherford Falls focused on the friendship between Nathan (Ed Helms) and Reagan (Jana Schmieding) in the town of Rutherford Falls. Trouble arises when a statue of Nathan’s ancestor is ordered to be removed, prompting him to embark on a campaign to save the monument. Meanwhile, his friendship with Reagan is tested, as Nathan’s ancestor is known for his attacks on Reagan’s ancestors in the colonial era.
Along with Helms and Schmieding, Rutherford Falls starred Michael Greyeyes, Jesse Leigh, and Dustin Milligan. It has also featured special appearances from actors like Bobby Wilson, Ben Koldyke, Devery Jacobs, and Paul F. Tompkins.
Series Star Ed Helms Was Hoping for a Third Season

Back in June, Ed Helms spoke with Collider about the series, and during the interview, he addressed the possibility of a third season. At the time, Helms wasn’t sure if the show would get renewed for not, and admitted that season 2 ended in such a way that it would pose some creative challenges as to where to take season 3. With that said, Helms was still very much hoping for a renewal.
“It’s hard to get into a Season 3 without spoiling a lot of Season 2, but I think anytime we approached the end of Season 2, the same way as the end of Season 1,” Helms said. “We’ve tried to paint ourselves into a corner that’s impossible to get out of, and then, if we get another season, that becomes the fun of the challenge. It’s like, ‘Okay, so we created this dead end for these characters, or for this story, so how the hell are we going to get out of it?’”
He added, “I think we did that again. So, the end of Season 2 is really, really, really fun. I have no idea what Season 3 would be, but I know we’ll crack it. I just hope we get a Season 3. It’ll be so damn fun if we can do it.”
