Russian Doll arrived on Netflix just over three years ago, and despite being renewed soon after, it has been a long wait for fans of the mind-bending sci-fi comedy-drama. Finally, the streamer has dropped a new crazy trailer along with the second season’s premiere date of April 20th. Starring Natasha Lyonne as game developer Nadia Vulvokov, who found herself caught in a time loop that saw her constantly dying and reliving the same night over and over, the show gained a massive 97% approval rate and a host of awards nominations.

The trippy Season 2 date announcement trailer gives a lot of flashy shots of Lyonne’s character, who is all set to find herself in another time-traveling conundrum. While the first season seemed to wrap up everything in a limited series kind of way, Lyonne, who also created the show, told the Hollywood Reporter in 2019 that she always envisioned the series as a “three-season idea.” That at least gives everyone the hope that the new season may not be the last. At the time she said:

Russian Doll Brought a Unique Take on the Time-Loop Comedy

While the basic concept of someone dying and reliving the same day over and over until they “get it right” and escape the loop has been used many times in movies and on TV, Russian Doll brought a twist halfway through the first season when it was revealed that Nadia was not the only person caught in the time loop, but her soon to be romantic interest Alan, played by Charlie Barnett, is also having his own night from hell.

“We definitely pitched it as this three-season idea and yet it’s so interesting to think about how that shapes and morphs in the time since making it. […] Who knows if we’ll be lucky enough to go back down the rabbit hole. That’s tomorrow’s question. But I think we have some ideas.”

The new season’s synopsis reads:

With just over a month to wait, the second season of Russian Doll doesn’t have any lingering questions to answer, with the previous season rounding out on a pretty happy end. Still, you can guarantee by the end of the first episode that there will be enough of a hook in play to keep everyone coming back to see just how wild things are going to get for the lead characters, and more importantly, how it will all be resolved by the end of the season.
