Netflix’s The Witcher has only aired two seasons so far, with season 3 recently wrapped filming, but according to new rumors, the streamer may have already given the green light to seasons 4 and 5, and they could film back to back. While this would be a massive undertaking for both cast, crew and Netflix’s finance department, The Witcher is one of the IPs that the streamer has gone all in on recently, having delved into animated movies, prequels, and more.

The information regarding the rumors was shared by Redanian Intelligence, and while they are to be considered just hearsay right now, it would not be surprising for Netflix to want to develop as much Witcher content as possible to keep fans of the franchise subscribed. With Netflix’s TUDUM event to come later this year, it is expected that The Witcher will feature heavily ahead of the new season and other spin-offs coming to the platform soon.

The new rumors do have some solid ground to work from, with series director Stephen Surjik having teased that season 4 was already planned out earlier this year. At the time, he said, “The writers and producers mapped out Season 4… I don’t know if I’m part of that mapping program, but at least they told me that they’re mapping it out."

There is still quite a way to go before we get to see a fourth season of The Witcher going into full production, and with Surjik mentioning only season 4 being planned, it could be a case that Netflix decides to continue down a more conventional “one season at a time” filming schedule, especially considering the recent concerns over their frivolous spending.

The Witcher Season 3 Will Adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s Novel, Time of Contempt

While Netflix has played around a little with some of The Witcher’s storylines, the series has so far followed the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski in a mostly linear fashion, having used The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny as the basis for its first season, and Blood of Elves as its second, with elements of the other two novels being resolved in the season. Now it looks like season 3 will continue the same trend by leaning on remaining storylines from Blood of Elves, while bringing in those of Time of Contempt, something that showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously confirmed. She said:

Many fans will be watching Netflix’s TUDUM event this year, which takes place on September 24th, for news of when The Witcher’s third season will premiere on the platform, as well as announcements about prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. In the meantime, the first two seasons of The Witcher and animated movie Nightmare of the Wolf are available now on Netflix.

“I don’t feel the need for our story to go beyond where the books go. I think Andrzej Sapkowski, the writer, he had a natural end in mind. Now actually, since we started the show, he has released more books, so we’ll have to see how that fits into it.”
