Rooster Teeth’s web series giant, RWBY, ended things with a massive cliffhanger when their eighth season finale aired in December 2019. But now, during their summer convention RTX, they finally gave the news to the fans of Team RWBY. The show is coming back, and from the teaser and synopsis below, things are about to get strange!
RWBY is a fan-favorite franchise out of Rooster Teeth’s arsenal. The web-series follows young huntress Ruby Rose (Lindsay Jones), and her team Weiss Schnee (Kara Eberle), Blake Belladonna (Arryn Zech), and Yang Xiao (Barbara Dunkelman) as they fight for their lives in a world that is constantly at war with the shadowy monsters known as Grimm. The show premiered in 2013 and has since grown a strong following of fans from around the world in its (so far) eight volumes.

Spoilers for RWBY: Volume 8
What started out as a show about these girls going to a prestigious academy has since evolved into a fierce political thriller. As audiences were introduced to the very history of the world of Remnant, the stakes have only grown higher. This all came to a head for the finale of Volume 8. As Team RWBY manages to evacuate the floating city of Atlas, they are intercepted by the followers of Salem, the show’s primary antagonist. During the battle, the team is thrown into a void, disappearing into nothing. Only a light teaser at the end of the finale’s credits gave audiences a clue as to what happened. RWBY is alive, but in an entirely new world.
Judging by the trailer, Volume 9 will be about exploring this new world and figuring out how it plays its part in the world of Remnant. But watchful fans can already pick up a few hints just by the Easter eggs of the new world itself. For newcomers to the show, fairy tales are a major part of RWBY’s storytelling and themes. Ruby herself takes inspiration from Little Red Riding Hood, the major political figureheads (James Ironwood, Leonardo Lionheart, Glynda Goodwitch, Qrow Branwen) take inspiration from the major figureheads of The Wizard of Oz, and plenty more. In the trailer, we get plenty of easter eggs for another well known piece of literary fantasy. The Cheshire cat, talking mice, a white queen, a foreboding knight, a jub-jub bird… this has Wonderland written all over it! Rooster Teeth also released a clip of Volume 9, which also gives further clues of the Wonderland nature of this new world (including the introduction of a new friend for Ruby).
Alongside this big reveal, Rooster Teeth made a second announcement. Animationmagazine.net reports production has gone underway for the very first RWBY feature film! The movie will be a collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Entertainment and will be a crossover between RWBY and DC Comics. The film will be an original story, expanding upon the hit RWBYxJustice League comic book series with an all new original story!
RWBY is available to watch on both Roosterteeth and Crunchyroll. While there is no set date for Volume 9’s premiere, the trailer promises for an early 2023 release. So there is plenty of time to catch up for both old and new fans!
