Having been streamed in over 360 million homes, Don’t Look Up was one of the biggest movies of the last month on Netflix, and boasting an Oscar-winning ensemble cast it does then become hard to understand exactly why the film is sitting on Rotten Tomatoes with a 56% approval rate and a green, “rotten” splat. While being a huge talking point since it made its debut as one of the streamer’s biggest releases of 2021, Adam McKay’s satirical look at how the human race would react to a world-destroying event proved to be one of those movies that audiences, and critics, either got or didn’t. However, Ron Perlman, who has a small role in the movie, has some simple words for those who gave the movie negative reviews.

During an interview with The Independent, Perlman, who is best known for roles in movies such as Hellboy and the TV series Sons of Anarchy, discussed the movie, and his reaction for those who didn’t “get” the film came with some choice words. He said:
“F*** you and your self-importance and this self-perpetuating need to say everything bad about something just so that you can get some attention for something that you had no idea about creating…It’s corrupt. And it’s sick. And it’s twisted….(I) understand that it’s part of how the internet has almost killed journalism. And now journalism is trying to do everything they can to co-opt and maintain their importance.”
Don’t Look Up Gained Negative Reviews From the Same Kind of People It Takes Aim At
Netflix
It is well noted that comedy is subjective, and no strain of comedy is more divisive as satire, mainly because the very essence of the genre is to ridicule and point out the ludicrous nature of some very real situations in politics, world events and society in general. Don’t Look Up set its sights on the destruction of the Earth in line with the prophecies of many climate change activists, but told its story by way of a planet-destroying asteroid and how the world’s most influential people would use it to their advantage. Of course, that included taking a very big sideswipe at the media among others, which in turn could be partially responsible for at least some of the negativity.
While there were many who were quick to pull Don’t Look Up down, The general critical mauling of the movie was only one part of the story, with the other part telling a much different tale. As well as becoming Netflix’s second-biggest movie ever, just behind Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice – another movie that was taken apart by critics but was hugely popular with audiences – Don’t Look Up has picked up a fair number of award nominations including four Golden Globe nods, as well as wins in a number of critic groups. This proves that there were plenty of people out there who did “get” the film.
Don’t Look Up is still streaming on Netflix, with its cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, and Ron Perlman among others.
