That’s a wrap on the Spy Kids reboot. Previously, it had been reported that Robert Rodriguez had been tapped to direct a new Spy Kids movie for Netflix after helming all four prior films. This time, he enlisted his son Racer Max Rodriguez to co-write the screenplay and produce alongside him.
On Twitter, Rodriguez announced that filming has been completed by recreating a photo that had been taken on the set of 2002’s Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams. At the time, Racer was still a small child, but while there’s been a lot that has changed since then, other things remain the same. You can take a look at the post below.

In the tweet, Rodriguez says, “Just wrapped a new SPYkids for Netflix, working with my son Racer Max! First foto is from the set of SPYkids 2 in 2002. Not much has changed, only now he’s co-writer, co-producer, and a little heavier.”
As previously reported, the new Spy Kids will follow a new cast of characters led by Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Zachary Levi (Shazam!), Everly Carganilla (The Afterparty), and Connor Esterston (Attaway General). Producers include Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger alongside Elizabeth Avellan, Robert Rodriguez, and Racer Max Rodriguez. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre are executive producing.

The Spy Kids franchise kicked off with the original installment released in 2001. Writer-director Robert Rodriguez would return for the following three sequels, which include 2002’s Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, 2003’s Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, and 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. In 2018, Netflix would also debut two seasons of the animated adaptation Spy Kids: Mission Critical.
The new Spy Kids does not yet have a premiere date on Netflix.
