There are often many articles centered on the pressures put on young actresses in Hollywood to meet certain beauty expectations, but Robert Pattinson has touched on the same pressures being faced by male stars in the industry. While speaking to ES Magazine, The Batman star revealed that he has previously taken part in many fad diets in order to lose weight and meet certain expected standards.

As the heartthrob lead of the Twilight movies, on the surface, it seems that Robert Pattinson has never had to worry about his looks, but scratch beneath the surface and the actor has frequently been drawn into joining the many actors who go through some extreme regimes to continue to be seen as meeting Hollywood standards. He told the publication that “it’s crazy” to think of some of the things he has done to keep up his appearance to ridiculously lofty standards. He said:

“I have basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency. I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks as a detox. Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently, it’s a cleanse… you definitely lose weight. I tried to do keto once. I was like, Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time? But I didn’t realize that you can’t have beer as it completely defeats the purpose. Even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive — and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late.”

Having become so famous for playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, getting into “more serious” roles has taken almost a decade for Robert Pattinson to achieve. Since 2014 Pattinson has mainly focused on independent and smaller films, slowly gaining critical acclaim for performances in movies such as The Lighthouse. In 2020, he began dipping his toe back into mainstream cinema with roles in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and then found himself a new franchise with Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Despite many changes at Warner Bros. Discovery regarding their upcoming DC movies and TV shows, The Batman has a bright future. Matt Reeves is currently working on both a sequel to Pattinson’s debut as the Dark Knight as well as two spin-off shows centering on The Penguin and Arkham Asylum, and Pattinson’s younger take on Bruce Wayne will continue to be at the center of that. Writer-director Reeves previously commented:

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”
