We’ve already seen so much excitement from fans surrounding The Batman, the upcoming superhero movie starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, that there’s no reason to believe it won’t be a hit in theaters. Because Warner Bros. has already committed to spinoff shows at HBO Max with rumored plans for more movie sequels, we’ll more likely than not see Bruce’s story continue on the big screen. It’s probably just a matter of time before the announcement is official.

In the February 2022 issue of Empire magazine, Pattinson teased that he has some early ideas in mind for the future of his Batman. Teasing that he wants to flesh out a full trilogy in this role, Pattinson said, “I’ve made a kind of map for where Bruce’s psychology would grow over two more movies. I would love to do it.”

“As the first standalone Batman in ten years, the hope is we can lay a foundation that you can build stories upon," producer Dylan Clark adds. Those plans are already in motion as well, as Colin Farrell has signed on to star as Oswald Cobblepot in a Penguin spinoff after making his debut in The Batman. A separate spinoff series at HBO Max will follow the officers of Gotham’s police department. Spinoff movies are always possible as well in addition to more movie sequels.

First, it will all need to start with The Batman. We should have gotten the movie already, but the pandemic and multiple shooting delays have pushed the feature back to 2022. It’s long been one of the most anticipated movie releases as the sneak peeks have all been very promising. Even those who’ve questioned Pattinson’s casting initially are now mostly sold on the new Dark Knight.

“I’ve only ever made each movie as a passion project,” said director Matt Reeves. “This even more so, because when you know something has been done well before, and is so beloved, you can’t just come in and sleepwalk through it. You have to shoot for something. We’re trying to leave our mark on this.”

We have this standalone Batman movie coming out, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see other Batmen on the big screen. The Flash will also bring back Michael Keaton to reprise his classic version of Batman, while Ben Affleck’s Batman from the DCEU will also make an appearance. DC and Warner Bros. may be delving deep into the multiverse with that movie, but as we’ve already seen with the success of Joker, there is still a place for fun standalone movies based on popular DC characters.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022. Directed by Matt Reeves, the movie was written by Reeves and Peter Craig. It stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. As anticipated as the movie is, it remains to be seen if it will top the recent success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
