Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival in the out-of-competition sections of Premieres, Spectrum, New Frontier, and Park City at Midnight. Celebrating its 25th year, the 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. As previously announced, the Festival opens on January 15 in Park City with the world premiere of Mary and Max, a clay animation feature film from Academy Award-winning short film creators Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs....

Taika Waititi will play Blackbeard, one of history’s most famous pirates, in an upcoming series for HBO Max. Called Our Flag Means Death, the period comedy is written by David Jenkins (People of Earth), who also serves as series showrunner and executive produces alongside Waititi, Garrett Basch (What We Do in the Shadows) and Dan Halsted. Starring opposite Waititi in the series will be Rhys Darby (What We Do in the Shadows)....

3net, the joint venture 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX have begun principal photography on the world’s first native 3D War Documentary, it was announced today by Tom Cosgrove, President & CEO of 3net. The Civil War 3D, the most ambitious 3D series ever produced for television, will transport viewers back in time, retelling the war’s most pivotal moments both on and off the battlefields from the unique perspective of both sides in the historic conflict....

Busy actor Ryan Reynolds is now the front-runner to star in another high profile project, Safe House, according to Heat Vision Blog. The site reports that director Daniel Espinosa has been meeting with a host of hot talent including Tom Hardy, Zac Efron, James McAvoy, Sam Worthington and Shia LaBeouf for the role, although it seems Reynolds is now the leading candidate for the role. If Reynolds secures the role, Reynolds would play a young FBI agent who is the only surviving agent left after an ambush on a safe house where Reynolds’ character is guarding a dangerous prisoner (Denzel Washington) and Reynolds has to lead Washington to another safe house....

SCI FI Channel has rounded out casting on its upcoming Tin Man (working title) miniseries from RHI Entertainment. Joining the all-star cast led by Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming and Richard Dreyfuss, are Neal McDonough (Flags of Our Fathers), Kathleen Robertson (Hollywoodland) and Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto). Production on this SCI FI twist on L. Frank Baum’s classic novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is slated to begin in Vancouver later this month with an eye toward a December premiere....

Next week, Arrow fans will get their first glimpse at Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash in Part 1 of the midseason finale “The Scientist”, airing Wednesday, December 4 at 8 PM ET on The CW. The network has released the second promo for this upcoming episode, where Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is in danger of having his secret identity compromised. The second half of the Season 2 midseason finale, “Three Ghosts”, airs Wednesday, December 11....

Our buddy Robert over at IESB is reporting that Warner Brothers has delayed the start date of the upcoming mega-hero epic Justice League of America. In fact, he says the project might even get shut down. Despite the fact that artists, set designers and other crew members were hard at work on the preproduction of the film, a studio source close to IESB has stated, “Justice League of America is indeed in danger of not starting production on time and may be even getting scrapped altogether....

The Creep is back. Shudder has unveiled the brand-new poster for their upcoming Creepshow series and it pays tribute to horror legend George A. Romero. The streaming platform will be on hand with the cast and crew of the new series at San Diego Comic-Con later this week and horror fans can’t wait to see what they have come up with. Shudder is expected to reveal the first look at the highly anticipated series at the annual event along with some other surprises....

Sicario, which is Spanish for ‘hitman,’ is a 2015 film from director Denis Villeneuve about the drug war. The action takes place in two very close border towns — El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. Drug agents raid a safe house run by the Sonora Cartel, known throughout the world for their brutality, and are horrified to discover that behind the walls of the house are dozens of dead bodies. Worse, a bomb detonates outside the house, killing two government officials....

As Thanos would no doubt concur, Spider-Man: No Way Home defying COVID pandemic uncertainties to become a $1 billion hit was always inevitable, and it is now official as Tom Holland’s latest adventure as Peter Parker has become the first movie to achieve the feat since The Rise of Skywalker back in December 2019. Despite being delayed a number of times, the passion for Spider-Man clearly didn’t suffer for it, as the film snatched the second highest opening weekend ever from under the nose of Avengers: Infinity War with a $600 million box office haul....

Spider-Man: No Way Home, just like the protagonist in it, swings to the very top, albeit the building being the box office. By nearing a billion dollars in the global box office, impressively, without the aid of the Chinese release, which is the biggest box office in the world, Spider-Man: No Way Home sits at number one, not only in some of the endless lists of “All Spider-Man Movies, Ranked,” but in the box office numbers as well....

Showtime is developing a half-hour comedy based on director Spike Lee’s first feature film, the 1986 indie classic She’s Gotta Have It. The filmmaker will write the pilot script and he is attached to direct the pilot episode. The film, which Spike Lee shot in just 12 days on a $175,000 budget, centers on Nora Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns), a sexually independent Brooklyn woman who balances three potential suitors, played by Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell and Spike Lee....

The idea with Pulse is interesting: While working on a telecommunications project, someone found an unknown frequency that opens a door between the living and the dead that cannot be closed. The dead, in the form of thin pale creepy-eepies, begin to make their way into our world through the Internet, cell phones, and other forms of technology we use to communicate. Once they arrive, they steal the “will to live” from each person they encounter resulting in an epidemic of suicides and, ultimately, the end of mankind....
