Don’t tell Samuel L. Jackson that Marvel movies aren’t cinema. In recent years, superhero movies have come under fire from filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Roland Emmerich, all of whom had negative things to say about the genre and its impact on Hollywood. The situation came up while Jackson was a guest on The View, and the actor brushed off their criticism by suggesting that directors criticizing superhero movies are in actuality just upset that their own films aren’t performing as well....

YOUTUBE RESCUES DEAD TV SERIES In what amounts to the first case of the video website YouTube.com’s resuscitating a canceled TV series, NBC is expected to announce today (Friday) that it will resurrect Nobody’s Watching, which was canceled last year by The WB. Two weeks ago, the New York Timesreported that a copy of the pilot had been downloaded more than 300,000 times since it was posted on YouTube.com in mid-June....

SAG “SOLIDARITY?” NOT WITH AFTRA The Screen Actors Guild has scheduled what it is calling a “solidarity” rally at its Wilshire Boulevard headquarters in Los Angeles on Monday, but trade reports indicated today (Friday) that the rally will demonstrate no solidarity whatsoever with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists – and in fact will denounce AFTRA’s recent agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Daily Varietyreported that representatives of Membership First, the activist group that now controls the union plan to call on SAG members who hold dual membership in AFTRA to vote against the deal when ratification ballots are sent out next week....

SAG-AMPTP TALKS ARE LONG, BUT … Surprising many industry observers who expected the first meeting between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers under the auspices of federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez would be perfunctory and unproductive, the two sides in fact spent 12 hours together, adjourning at 1100 p.m. Thursday night. They then said that they would meet again on Friday. Nevertheless, Daily Variety, citing people familiar with the meeting, said that “progress appears to have been negligible” and that it consisted mostly of each side repeating the positions they have taken previously....

UNIVERSAL TO BUILD $3.1 BILLION PARK IN KOREA Universal Studios and partners plan to build a $3.1-billion theme park south of Seoul in South Korea, the provincial government of Gyeonggi said today (Tuesday). As reported by Bloomberg News, the park, located near Hwaseong, will also include hotels, a golf course and a shopping mall. There was no indication whether, like its U.S. counterparts in California and Florida, it will also include a working film studio....

REPORT: ZELL TO BE OUSTED FROM TRIBUNE Creditors of Tribune company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December, are working on a reorganization plan that will remove billionaire Sam Zell from any future involvement with the company, the Chicago Sun Timesreported Sunday, citing two sources familiar with the process. The creditors, the newspaper said, plan to sell off Tribune’s assets piecemeal. They include the Chicago Tribuneand WGN-TV in Chicago and the Los Angeles Timesand KTLA in Los Angeles....

SAG SAYS “INFORMAL” TALKS CONTINUE Screen Actors Guild National Executive Director Doug Allen assured members Sunday that union negotiators are continuing to participate in informal talks with members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. “Progress doesn’t have to occur directly across a table,” he wrote in an email. “Discussions through alternative channels are ongoing as we work toward a fair deal for actors as soon as possible.” While Allen referred to several issues that remain a top priority for union negotiators, including jurisdiction over programs produced for the Internet, residuals for new media productions, product integration, and force majeure, conspicuously missing from the message was any mention of an increase DVD residuals, a matter the AMPTP has said it will refuse to discuss....

MILLIONS TO LOSE VIACOM NETS TONIGHT Unless an eleventh-hour reprieve is granted, all of Viacom’s 19 cable channels, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, and Spike, could face elimination at midnight tonight from Time Warner Cable, the nation’s second-largest cable-TV company behind Comcast. Both sides issued dire warnings of a stalemate in their negotiations, with time Warner claiming that Viacom is asking for exorbitant increases in its carriage fees and Time Warner insisting that its demands are “reasonable and modest,” amounting to only 25 cents per subscriber, and that it has been able to negotiate similar raises from other major cable companies....
