MGM has found its RoboCop writer. The studio is hiring Joshua Zetumer to script the reboot of the 1987 science fiction film about a cop brought back from death and drafted to become a remorseless and ruthless cyborg cop. That plan is subverted when suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him. MGM recently hired Brazilian director Jose Padilha, helmer of the cop franchise Elite Squad and the documentary Bus 174....
In the 1970s, an aspiring actress named Diane Thomas was waitressing and developing a screenplay in her spare time, a script that would later be titled Romancing the Stone. After a year, when Thomas had finally completed the screenplay and sent it around to various studios, and miraculously, the story was picked up by 20th Century Fox. Michael Douglas, who starred in the film, explains to the Los Angeles Times that the script had a “spontaneity” and that there was “a total lack of fear in the writing....
RuPaul already had a well-established career before RuPaul’s Drag Race. Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to portray Queen front man Freddie Mercury in an untitled biopic, according to Deadline New York. The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan penned the script for the upcoming movie, which will go into production in 2011. Graham King is producing via his GK Films banner, and he will also finance the project. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are also producing through their Tribeca Productions label....
Marvel and Star Wars fans have been pointing out the similarities between Sebastian Stan and Mark Hamill for a while now. The Pam & Tommy star is still trying to avoid directly answering the question of whether he would one day play Luke Skywalker in a Star Wars project. Best known for playing Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier in the MCU, Stan has been on the promotion trail a lot at the beginning of 2022 for some of his non-Marvel projects that are out now or coming soon....
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu is headed to the sci-fi genre with his next film, Hello Stranger. Deadline reports that Liu has been cast in an undisclosed role in the film, which is set in the near future and centers on the dangers of artificial intelligence. Hello Stranger also stars Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Robbie Amell (Code 8), and Alicia Sanz (El Cid)....
In a story from Variety, Sony is going up against Lionsgate as they bid for the Terminator franchise. The studio is keeping mum but a source close to the bidding has confirmed that Sony put in a bid Thursday. This was the final day for submitting offers. Lionsgate came in last month as the first bidder for the rights to the franchise. They offered $15 million and a 5% cut of future gross receipts....
It’s a good day for those who enjoy a galaxy far, far away in animated form. Disney Channel has officially renewed Star Wars Resistance for a second season, which is set to debut in fall 2019. CABLERS BRACE FOR ACTORS’ STRIKEThe possibility of a strike by Screen Actors Guild (SAG) against producers of made-for-cable TV shows loomed large Monday as the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) stepped in to aid cable producers after SAG asked members for strike authorization. The AMPTP said that it had offered SAG a 14-percent increase in residual payments, an amount that was in line with that recently negotiated with the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America....

YOUTUBE IN TALKS TO RENT FULL-LENGTH MOVIES ONLINE YouTube, by far the most popular video website, has been talking to several major movie studios about renting their films online, published reports said today (Thursday), citing people familiar with the talks. The studios are reportedly Lions Gate, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. The films would reportedly be posted online using a system modeled after Apple’s iTunes.
