RATHER ASKS OBAMA TO PROBE NEWS “CRISIS” Former CBS anchor Dan Rather has called on President Obama to form a non-partisan, blue-ribbon commission to investigate the current state of the news media. In an op-ed piece appearing in today’s (Tuesday) Washington Post,Rather argues that media consolidation and government deregulation have resulted in a reduction in the number of news outlets. Those that remain, he writes, “have largely come under corporate mandates to increase profits quarterly - which has meant a reduction in news-gathering personnel, the shuttering of overseas bureaus, and the nearly complete subordination of a public trust to the profit motive....

MILLIONS WITHOUT TV ON FEB. 17? An official of Consumers Union, parent of Consumer Reportsmagazine, has indicated that the current educational campaign to alert the public to the transition to digital TV on February 17, has failed to reach millions of Americans, who will be unable to receive television when the switch occurs. “We need boots on the ground,” Consumers Union policy analyst Joel Kelsey has told the New York Times....

The Formans are coming back to television. Netflix has announced that they’ll be giving That ’70s Show a sequel series that will bring back at least two key members of the original cast. Dubbed That ’90s Show, the spinoff brings back series creators Bonnie and Terry Turner. Showtime has renewed The Big C for a fourth and final season, the network announced today at its Television Critics Association’s summer tour panel. The season will consist of four one-hour episodes, with the series concluding Sunday, September 16. It isn’t known when the first of these final episodes will debut, although, if they run all four in a row, it will likely premiere Sunday, August 26. The speculation now is whether or not the show will end with Laura Linney’s Cathy Jamison dying from cancer....

Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for the new Rugrats reboot series.
