Relativity Media has closed a deal with Breck Eisner (The Crazies, Sahara) to direct its upcoming live-action film based on Stretch Armstrong, it was announced today by Relativity’s President, Tucker Tooley. Relativity partnered with global branded play company Hasbro, Inc. to develop and produce the film which is targeted for an April 11, 2014 release date. Relativity will be the domestic distributor and will release the film internationally through its network of foreign output partners....

i>LEATHERHEADS LOSES MORE YARDAGE As expected, Universal’s George Clooney starrer Leatherheadswas thrown for a bigger loss than studio executives had predicted. The period football comedy, which many analysts had suggested would be a sure winner at the box office over the weekend, came in a disappointing third with only $12.7 million. Analysts had forecast a $15-20-million take for the film. Second place went to the Jodie Foster family film Nim’s Islandfrom 20th Century Fox, which opened with $13....

SAG LEADERS TEAR INTO AFTRA A “solidarity” rally staged by the Screen Actors Guild on Monday reportedly drew a modest crowd of a few hundred, who heard speakers denounce the recent agreement between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. “AFTRA has now abandoned us to make their own deal to the potential detriment of actors,” SAG President Alan Rosenberg told the crowd....

ANALYSTS ENGAGE IN IDOL SPECULATION Ratings analysts on Thursday were trying to figure out what the 9-percent drop in viewers (to 28.8 million viewers from 32 million a year ago) for Wednesday night’s American Idolresults show really means –, for Fox Television, which airs Idol, for its affiliates, and for its advertisers. Some attributed the decline to the general perception that Adam Lambert was a shoo-in to win the title. (He didn’t; Kris Allen did....

The CW Network has given early pickups to five of its established series for next season, including an All-Star Cycle of America’s Next Top Model and the network’s top-rated drama The Vampire Diaries. All five shows will return in Fall 2011. With America’s Next Top Model ordered for both cycles next season, The CW’s signature reality series will kick-off the Fall with its first-ever All-Star Edition, featuring the models who became breakout characters and who had the most memorable stories from past cycles....

It’s been a while since any news has broken around M. Night Shyamalan’s Tales from the Crypt revival on TNT. Originally slated for a late 2017 premiere, TNT was recently quoted saying that the series reboot had hit various snags in the rights department which were keeping the show from getting made. Although the studio didn’t say if they were moving forward or not, it seemed that there were ongoing talks to get things resolved....

While doing press rounds for this weekend’s Immortals, director Tarsem Singh was asked if he’d ever tackle the superhero genre. Tarsem explained that this did not interest him, but, in the same breath, revealed that his dream project at the moment is a live-action version of the Emmy-winning animated series Samurai Jack, which aired for three season on Cartoon Network starting in 2001. In the fall of 2010, FX debuted a new series entitled Terriers, from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and Ocean’s Eleven writer Ted Griffin. The show, starring Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James as a pair of unorthodox private detectives, was universally beloved by the critics, but could never quite find an audience, and was canceled after just one season. During a panel at the ATX Television Festival this weekend, it seems the creative forces behind the show are hoping to bring the show back as a revival on either the big or small screen....

Revisiting an early 2000s film can bring many shocks. For one, there is the inclusion of many problematic scenes. Soul Train creator Don Cornelius was found dead inside his Mulholland Drive home Wednesday morning, having passed away at the age of 75. The cause of death was an apparently self-afflicted gunshot wound to the head. There were no signs of foul play, though Los Angeles detectives are currently investigating the scene. Don Cornelius was a man of many trades before becoming the host of South Chicago’s biggest dance party. He held down work as an insurance salesman, a TV newsman and a deejay before approaching his station manager at WCIU-TV about a televised dance showcase, which would go onto reach national popularity....
