Movie Picture There is a never ending supply of zit-faced teenagers who love low budg’ slasher movies. It’s like Soylent Green recycling itself over and over. This audience, being young and somewhat ignorant of the billions of preceding slasher films, can’t really differentiate between good and bad because they were raised on swill like Scream and Urban Legend. It’s sort of akin to Hot Topic’s regular customers who love bands like My Chemical Romance and Fallout Boy because they were never exposed to Poison Idea or Articles of Faith....

Over the years that Disney has owned Star Wars, a distinct pattern of storytelling has emerged. The franchise has shaped itself into three, possibly more, separate, individual genres that once were part of a unified brand. They all have the same type of content and look, and all of them even tie into the same story, but they are noticeably different. There is, of course, the main canon, consisting of the nine episodic movies, but Disney has made a clear distinction in the types of Star Wars content they produce ever since The Mandalorian....

Back in June, we reported the unfortunate news that the Untitled Star Wars TV Series is on hold for at least three years. While that status hasn’t changed, producer Rick McCallum revealed the working title for this series is Star Wars: Underworld. IT is a novel by Stephen King that recently saw a two-part adaptation from Andy Muschietti in 2017 and 2019. The book and movies center around a group of seven misfits known as the Losers Club: stuttering leader Bill (Jaeden Martell); fast-talking Riche (Finn Wolfhard); strong Beverly (Sophia Lillis); shy Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor); sickly Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer); kind Mike (Chosen Jacobs); and careful Stan (Wyatt Oleff). The kids live in the town of Derry, Maine, which falls prey to attacks from the shape-shifting monster IT (Bill Skarsgård) every 27 years....

After three weeks, there’s a new box office champ - Stomp the Yard. The hip-hop dance drama took the top spot at theaters debuting with $22 million, notes Box Office Mojo. Columbus Short and Meagan Good star, along side R&B sensations Chris Brown and Ne-Yo. Night at the Museum came in second laughing up $17.1 million at the box office, and an extremely impressive three week total of $185.7 million. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and Dick Van Dyke star in the comedy....

Stranger Things 4 has already been breaking records for Netflix, and it has passed another huge milestone for the streamer by becoming only the second title ever to have over 1 billion hours viewed. With the fourth season of the hit sci-fi horror fantasy show already having pulled in massive audiences, the arrival of the season finale on July 1 has seen numbers once again soaring, and season 4 has now racked up 1....

MURDOCH CALLS CROWE FILM “A FLOP” News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch has called A Good Year, 20th Century Fox’s newest release starring Russell Crowe, “a flop” and has forecast that it will result in a $20-million loss for the studio. On the other hand, he told a shareholders’ meeting in Adelaide, Australia today (Wednesday), he expected The Devil Wears Prada, which cost $17 million to produce, to return a profit of more than $100 million....

MORE GOOD NEWS FROM THE “CONGLOMS” Media conglomerates News Corp and Time Warner each reported higher-than-expected quarterly results Wednesday, with their movie and cable businesses offsetting declines at their other – mostly print – businesses. Time Warner’s Time Inc. unit, which publishes such magazines as Time, People, and Entertainment Weekly,took a particularly hard hit as advertisers retrenched and subscribers failed to renew. A new breed of werewolves is coming to Syfy with the acquisition of the first season of the new Canadian scripted series Bitten from leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne). Season 1 of Bitten, consisting of 13 one-hour episodes, will premiere on Syfy in 2014. Based on the New York Times best-selling Women of the Otherworld novels by Kelley Armstrong, Bitten is an emotionally charged supernatural thriller starring Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, Ted) as Elena Michaels, the lone female werewolf in existence....

Syfy today announced that its long-running flagship series Warehouse 13 will return for a fifth and final season of six episodes in 2014. A production of Universal Cable Productions, Warehouse 13 will begin filming in Toronto this summer. Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions, released the following statement. Earlier today, the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival announced a handful of titles that will premiere at the 2011 event. Films announced include Jodie Foster’s drama The Beaver, Greg Mottola’s comedy-adventure Paul and Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, a documentary by Rodman Flender that follows behind-the-scenes of O’Brien’s summer tour, among others. The Beaver will screen in this year’s Centerpiece slot on Wednesday, March 16. The complete festival lineup will be announced in early February 2011....
