WAITING FOR SPIDEY It may have taken in only $9 million, but Paramount’s Disturbiaremained at the top of the box office for the third week in a row over the weekend. Analysts were checking record books attempting to discover when – if ever – a film had pulled off a box-office hat trick with such little revenue in its third week. It was the lowest take for a No. 1 film since The Covenantlast September, a month that studios generally write off because kids are returning to school....

WRITERS’ STRIKE AVERTED? Raising legitimate hopes for the first time that a strike by the Writers Guild of America against Hollywood film and TV studios could be averted before the expiration of the current WGA contract on October 31, the producers on Tuesday withdrew a proposal that would have delayed payment of residuals to writers until the costs of production, distribution and marketing were recouped. Nick Counter, president of the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, said that the group was withdrawing the proposal “in the overriding interest of keeping the industry working and removing what has become an emotional impediment and excuse by the WGA not to bargain....

WILL VIACOM SUIT SEND YOUTUBE DOWN THE TUBES? Industry analysts were waiting to see whether other media companies would follow Viacom’s lead in suing Google subsidiary YouTube for copyright infringement or instead use the threat of legal action as leverage to create favorable partnerships with the popular video website. Even at major media companies themselves, there appeared to be disagreement in the ranks over how such video-sharing sites should be dealt with....

RATHER’S LAWSUIT AGAINST CBS TOSSED OUT Dan Rather has lost his lawsuit against CBS. A New York appeals court today (Tuesday) dismissed the former anchorman’s lawsuit, which claimed the network had commissioned a biased investigation of his report about former President Bush’s National Guard service during the Vietnam War in order to appease the administration. The appeals court ruled that New York Supreme Court Justice Ira Gammerman “erred in denying the defendants’ motion to dismiss the claims for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty, and therefore we find the complaint must be dismissed in its entirety....

The state of DC films has been in disarray for over half a decade now. 2016 was the year that broke DC, and it hasn’t recovered since. The release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice divided audiences early in the year and caused Warner Bros. to go into a complete panic over their plans for the newly established DCEU. They grew increasingly distrusting of Zack Snyder’s direction for the upcoming Justice League movie and the DCEU, which, combined with a family tragedy, led to Snyder leaving and WB eventually hiring Joss Whedon to complete what ended up being a complete mishmash of a movie in 2017....

“I’m shooting The Boys through the end of the year,” Urban said. As we know that season 3 is wrapped and will premiere in June, this might mean that Urban and the cast will be filming new episodes of an unannounced fourth season of The Boys. While that seems to be the most likely answer, it’s also possible that Urban could be referring to a spinoff series, though the only live-action spinoff that’s been officially announced spoofs the X-Men with a superhero college setting....

In a recent chat with Collider, Mother’s Milk actor Laz Alonso teased the bloody mayhem that cans can expect to see in season 3. While he can’t divulge any specific details, what the actor was able to reveal was that the amount of prop blood used for the next season is excessive. In fact, Alonso says the FX team has already used more than three times the amount of all the blood that we saw in season 2....

The Boys very quickly established itself as one of Prime Video’s biggest assets following its debut, and the second season landed at a time many counties were either in Covid lockdowns or were restricted in where they could, or more importantly couldn’t, go meaning that many more people discovered the series in 2020. Now as well an animated spinoff, The Boys season 3 is coming soon, and showrunner Eric Kripke has been teasing fans on Twitter with an update on where post-production is on the new season and when a trailer is likely to arrive....

Paramount Pictures recently announced a casting call for The Coen Brother’s upcoming Western remake True Grit. They are seeking a 12-16 year old girl to play the lead. No experience is necessary, but it should be noted that the young lady would be going up against such acting luminaries as Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. The Conjuring is easily one of the most successful and well-known horror franchises to make its mark on the horror genre. New Line seems to have struck paranormal gold with the original film, titled The Conjuring, and its disparate spin-offs and sequels. In total, the franchise has generated over two billion dollars in revenue and doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. The first film was met with unexpectedly wide acclaim and was quickly dubbed a modern horror classic....

With Robert Rodriguez off the project, it didn’t take too long for another director to start circling a remake in the works. According to Entertainment Weekly, director Robert Luketic is working on developing the film. Rodriguez had bowed out of the project that was set up at Universal because the studio wanted to make the film in Germany and Rodriguez wanted to shoot the film in Austin, TX, where he lives with his family....

While I was expecting a poor-man’s “Seabiscuit,” I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed “Secretariat.” While I am too young to actually remember the true-life events depicted in the film, or know enough about horseracing to have heard of the Triple Crown winning horse before this film, I was intrigued enough by the story to go along for the emotional ride. Much like other Disney sport movies, this film is more about the time the great event took place in than the event itself....

Following the recent release of Apple TV+’s second season of See, filming on the third season has now wrapped, and it sounds like Jason Momoa will be, well, seen a lot less when the post-apocalyptic drama returns. Shot back-to-back with the second season, showrunner Jonathan Tropper has confirmed that filming on the third season in Toronto, Canada is now complete, with the third outing expected to be released in Spring or early summer next year....
