DISNEY RETURNING TO 2-D ONLY, SAYS REPORT John Lasseter and Ed Catmull are planning to return the Walt Disney Co.’s studios in Burbank to its roots as a “traditional” (hand-drawn) animation company exclusively, while Pixar will continue to turn out computer-animated (CG) features, Disney watcher Jim Hill reported on his website www.jimhillmedia.com today (Tuesday). In doing so, Lasseter, the chief creative officer for Disney Animation, and Catmull, the unit’s president, will be reversing Disney’s efforts over the past three years to, in Hill’s words, “retrain that studio’s staff as well as to change Disney Feature Animation into a state-of-the-art CG operation....

Supernatural has long been one of The CW Network’s top performers, even after nine seasons. In fact, the ratings for Season 9, which continues with “First Born” on Tuesday, January 21 at 8 PM ET, have improved over Season 8, a rarity for a show that’s been on the air this long. During the network’s TCA Winter Tour panel, CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed that the show will continue indefinitely, provided the ratings don’t falter....

And they’re just going to keep cranking out more. Back in December, it was reported that The Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green has signed on for the female lead role in the CBS All Access series Star Trek Discovery, although the streaming service never confirmed the casting. On Monday, just hours after The Walking Dead Season 7 finale, the streaming service confirmed the actress, revealing that she’ll play First Officer Michael Burnham on the new series. Sony is ushering in a new era of “green” DVD’s, starting with its loveable mall cop. According to Variety, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will kick off a new era of environmentally-friendly DVD packaging starting with Paul Blart: Mall Cop on May 19. The studio will release all of its standard-definition DVD’s from Paul Blart: Mall Cop on, in new lighter packaging that uses 20% less plastic than traditional DVD packaging. The discs will also come in shrinkwrap that is 20% lighter and the paper the artwork is printed on will contain 30% post-consumer waste, as opposed to the 100% virgin paper the studio previously used....

Sony Pictures Entertainment has emerged the highest bidder for the ’30s comicstrip Flash Gordon, inking a deal with Hearst for the rights to adapt into a live-action film. According to Variety, Breck Eisner (Sahara) is attached to direct. Neal Moritz will produce through his Sony-based Original Films banner. Flash Gordon was turned into a 1980 film that starred Sam Jones. Hearst Corp.’s King Features Syndicate optioned the property to Universal four years ago, with The Mummy director Stephen Sommers and his partner Bob Ducsay to produce....

Comic book writer Todd McFarlane has provided yet another promising update on the development of the upcoming Spawn reboot, revealing that progress on the long-awaiting project is getting “hot and heavy.” Speaking on the Comicbook Nation podcast, McFarlane commended the likes of Venom and Joker for introducing wider audiences to the idea of a comic book antihero leading a tentpole blockbuster. The proposed Spawn reboot has been in development for quite some time, and while there has been very little in terms of major updates, McFarlane believes that the huge success of Venom and Joker, as well as the recent The Batman and Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight, will help him finally bring Spawn back to the big screen....

After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 and the reveal of the multiverse, Spider-Man has become a hot topic as the actors who played Spider-Man in the past, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire made a return to the screen in a now-iconic team-up sequence. With a brand new teaser showing off Eleven’s new life in California recently dropping, we also have a very cool new poster for Stranger Things. The poster looks to be more of a tribute to the series than something strictly promoting the upcoming fourth season as it comes in the design of a map of the town of Hawkins. What it does do is show us just far the show has come as far as taking the story to multiple locations in season 4....
