VIDEOGAME MAKER SHOOTS DOWN MAX PAYNE The head of the company that produces the Max Payne video games has joined the criticism of the movie based on the game. 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller told the video-game magazine Edge, “There are several fundamental story flaws … in the film that have me shaking my head in bewilderment.” Among them, he said, is the fact that Payne is seen in a flashback scene half way through the movie learning that his family has been murdered....
WHOLESOME BEATS GORE AT BOX OFFICE There was no sign of economic hardship at the box office over the weekend, as Disney’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year, a film that reportedly cost less than $15 million to make, raked in $42 million – the most any musical has earned in its opening weekend ever. Moreover, another low-cost film, Lionsgate’s R-rated horror flickSaw V, debuted with $30.5 million in ticket sales....
OLYMPIC JUGGERNAUT PRESSES ON Analysts who had forecast a big drop in the ratings for the Summer Olympics during the second week are losing their bets. They’re off – but not by much. Tuesday’s telecasts drew an average of 26.3 million viewers; 24.32 million tuned in on Wednesday. Tuesday’s primetime coverage peaked in the final half hour with 28.92 million viewers. Wednesday’s, at 10:00 p.m. with 29.92 million. On each night NBC drew more viewers than all three of its primary network competitors combined....
The CW is pulling out all the stops in helping raise funds for displaced Texans following the devastation Hurricane Harvey left in its wake this past week and a half. And they are doing it with the biggest crossover they’ve yet pulled off. Emmy-winning comedian and actress Sarah Silverman is joining the cast of Season 2 of the acclaimed Showtime drama series Masters of Sex. Silverman will recur in the guest starring role of Helen. Very good news, Sense8 fans. Netflix is not known for canceling shows, but not too long ago the streaming service abruptly canceled the sci-fi series after just two seasons, leaving the show with no real finale to speak of. All of the fan outcry and support for the series has worked, as Netflix has announced that they are going to give Sense8 a two-hour series finale, which is currently in the works....
With numerous streaming services, on top of countless television channels, constantly producing TV series at a pace seemingly never seen before, it may be difficult for some shows to develop an audience, or even just have their existence recognized. Severance seemed to be one of those shows, yet another of the poorly advertised Apple TV+ programs on a good streaming platform with a surprisingly low amount of members (though that has certainly changed after their original film CODA won the Best Picture Oscar, boosting Apple’s membership by 25%)....

TNT has picked up the critically acclaimed series Southland, closing a deal with Warner Bros. Television that will bring the drama from Emmy-winning producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing) to the network in January. TNT has obtained exclusive rights to air all six episodes that have been shot for the second season, as well as the seven episodes from the series’ first season. A study conducted by Uswitch reveals Spider-Man: No Way Home to be this year’s most illegally-watched film. FCC DOES A TURN-AROUNDIn what appeared to be a 180-degree turn, the FCC on Thursday released a study concluding that an à la carte system for selling cable channels would offer consumers “substantial benefits,” including a reduction in their cable bills of as much as 13 percent. In November 2004, the FCC issued a report concluding just the opposite. The current study said that the earlier one was flawed because it contained inaccurate information from a study by Booz Allen Hamilton Inc....
