THE WAR OVER WAR Some PBS stations are planning to air an edited version of the Ken Burns WWII documentary The War, concerned over the possible reaction of the FCC to profanities uttered by soldiers in the footage, Broadcasting & Cablereported Monday. Their decision has encountered the anger of the American Civil Liberties Union, the trade publication indicated. “To impede the First Amendment rights of those who fought and died for those very rights is reprehensible,” said ACLU Washington legislative director Caroline Fredrickson in a statement....

IDOL: TOPS AGAIN American Idol remained unstoppable Tuesday night as it averaged 25.10 million viewers, peaking in the third half hour with 25.96 million. The wonder is that the competition from CBS and NBC remained strong. In the 8:00 p.m. hour, CBS averaged 18.07 million viewers for NCIS,while NBC averaged 8.20 million for The Biggest Loser. At 9:00 p.m., CBS’s The Mentalist registered 18.26 million viewers, while the second hour of Loserdrew 9....

SAWYER TO REMAIN ON GMA AT LEAST UNTIL SUMMER Diane Sawyer has reassured ABC News executives that she plans to remain as cohost of Good Morning Americauntil at least early summer, the New York Timesreported today (Wednesday), citing one executive briefed directly on Sawyer’s status. The newspaper’s source said that Sawyer gave her reassurance to ABC News President David Westin during a meeting before Christmas and that she also met with Disney CEO Robert Iger....

NIGHTLINE TOPS DAVE, CONAN AGAIN ABC’s Nightlineno longer featured wall-to-wall Michael Jackson coverage last week, but it still managed to beat both David Letterman and Conan O’Brien in the ratings for the third consecutive week – the first time it has led in the late-night period for that length of time since 1996. MEDIA CONGLOMERATES UNITE AGAINST YOUTUBE NBC Universal and rival News Corp plan to announce as early as today that they are creating a video-sharing service to challenge Google’s YouTube, the Los Angeles Timesreported today (Thursday). According to the newspaper, the service will be integrated into the Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and MySpace websites, providing TV shows, movies, and user-generated material. Eric Garland, CEO of market researcher BigChampagne, said that the companies were “pooling resources” to challenge YouTube, which he described as “the most disruptive force” their business has ever seen....

Supernatural returned to the CW Network last night and while we reported last week that a sixth season of the series was possible, apparently it’s even closer to a reality than previously thought. CinemaSpy is reporting that a sixth season of Supernatural has been confirmed by their sources. An announcement hasn’t been made as of yet, and creator Eric Kripke has long maintained that the show would run for five seasons, which would culminate with the Winchester brothers dueling with Satan himself....

Syfy is greenlighting 12 Monkeys, a drama series based on the 1995 Universal Pictures film directed by Terry Gilliam, to pilot. The 60-minute cast-contingent pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment, producer of the original Bruce Willis-Brad Pitt theatrical movie. Based on the classic hit film, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race....

Turner Classic Movies celebrates the brilliance in movies as recognized by the Academy starting February 1 Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will be hosting yet another annual 31 Days of Oscar festival starting February 1st. The 2011 edition of the month-long event will feature more than 340 Academy Award-nominated and winning movies, scheduled in trivia-inspired marathons. Producer Avi Arad, who has worked on the film adaptations of Marvel’s X-Men and Spider-Man, is making a movie inspired by the popular children’s toy Robosapien. Arad himself wrote the screenplay for Robosapien. He pitched the project at Cannes after having screened footage from his other toy based film, the soon to be released Bratz: The Movie. Arad conceived Robosapien as a spin-off of the Pinocchio legend. According to Variety, the story will revolve around a childless inventor who creates a substitute son in the form of a super intelligent robot....

You can bring home the latest adventure from smash-mouth filmmaker Guy Ritchie this January. RocknRolla will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on January 27.
