On July 5, 1989, television sitcoms as the world knew them changed forever. That was the day that Seinfeld premiered on NBC. Note that mid-summer date. That in and of itself was an indication that the network didn’t have high hopes for Jerry Seinfeld and his merry band of delightfully dysfunctional friends. Back in the pre-streaming days, hyped-up shows and any series expected to be a hit premiered in the fall; sometimes they premiered in mid-season with a big media push, but they rarely (save for Seinfeld) premiered in summer....

The year is 1988, and South Korea for the first time in its history, has been selected to host the Olympics. Fresh on the start of a new democratic government, things are starting to look up for citizens after years of violence, censorship, and the impacts of colonialism and war. Korean cinema often holds an investigative lens to this turbulent era in history, whether it is directly speaking about what happened during dictatorships, like in Im Sang-soo’s The President’s Last Bang, or taking on the burden through a singular fictional character, such as in Lee Chang-dong’s 1999 film Peppermint Candy....

According to an interview conducted by The Sunday Times Online, Simon Pegg has been approached by Steven Spielberg to play one of the Thompson Twins in the director’s upcoming adaptation of Tintin. Who does Spielberg want to get for the other Thompson Twin? Simon’s buddy Nick Frost, of course. Simon Pegg had this to say about the situation: Pegg apparently trailed off, lost in thought, unable to finish his sentence. Though Universal backed out of funding the film, Tintin is still set to be Steven Spielberg’s next motion picture....

We all know that when a series or movie is a hit these days, there’s a mad scramble to squeeze as much out of it as possible before the excitement dries up and withers away. When Squid Game became Netflix’s surprise hit of the year, it was inevitable they would soon be hounding creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to write a second season of the show about a group of down-on-their-luck people who find themselves in a deadly game with the promise of a huge cash prize....

Star Trek: Picard will premiere January 23rd, 2020 on CBS All Access. In addition, we have been given a new look at the highly anticipated series. Sir Patrick Stewart is reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, the character he made famous in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons. When the series was first announced, Star Trek fans lost their minds and nearly didn’t believe it and wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for the fact that Stewart was the one to deliver the news....

“WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM …” All three major networks interrupted their programming at 8:30 a.m. this morning (Thursday) to present special reports on the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The TVNewser website reported that NBC’s report from correspondent Jim Maceda in London was simulcast on MSNBC and included comments from Ann Curry who interviewed Bhutto in October days after she survived another attempt on her life. The NBC and ABC reports ended at 8:41 a....

BIG RISE FOR TV DESPITE RECESSION, SAYS STUDY Television will be able to dodge the recession handily, according to a study by Informa Telecoms & Media, which predicted Tuesday that ad revenue from TV would rise nearly 6 percent to $123 billion this year. An analyst for Informa predicted that a large part of that rise will be due to international coverage of the Olympic Games and the U.S. presidential elections....

From director Richard Ayoade comes the heartwarming and hilarious indie hit Submarine, which follows the plight of a young man (Craig Roberts) torn between losing his virginity and his plight to keep his parents from divorce. Submarine arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, October 4th. We have an exclusive look at this impending release with a clip from the movie. Check it out below. “Woohoo! Meow!” Over the weekend, in a surprise, 30-second trailer for Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Cat Mario entered the arena for the first time. The clip also featured the first time fans heard Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong voice. Premiering during Sunday’s NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles, the clip featured additional footage from a scene shown in the trailer that Nintendo released in November 2022....

After both CBS’ Supergirl and The CW’s The Flash teamed up for an unprecedented crossover episode this past spring, rumors started to surface that Supergirl would join the rest of the DC shows on The CW like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Those rumors were confirmed in May, with The CW renewing Supergirl for Season 2, keeping the show in its same Monday 8 PM time slot that it aired in over at CBS....

The Good I love the documentary style they employed for this film. The Bad I am sorry but I am a little burnt out on animated animal movies. Surf’s Up is essentially the story of 1987’s North Shore only it’s done with humans instead of animated animals. Cody (voice of Shia LaBeouf) loves surfing and for him winning is all that matters. So he sets about on a journey to take to part in the Big Z Memorial Surf-Off on Pen Gu Island....

Some new details regarding the upcoming Swamp Thing series have emerged online. Writer Gary Dauberman, known for his work on IT and several movies set within The Conjuring universe, has been tapped to help bring Swamp Thing to life for DC’s upcoming streaming service, DC Universe. Now, Dauberman has revealed some of what we can expect from the live-action take on the beloved character and it should make fans quite happy....

TNT’s long-running, breakout hit The Closer will wrap up its phenomenal run with a final season in 2011. The difficult decision to conclude the series with season seven was made by Kyra Sedgwick, the Emmy-winning star of The Closer. “It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks....

Another major injury has occurred on the set of Rust, the indie Western that recently shut down production following the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. While preparing to film a scene for the movie, Alec Baldwin was holding a gun believed to be loaded with blanks, not knowing that a live round had somehow gotten loaded into the firearm. This led to a fatal accident with the gun discharging the round, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza....

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Raimi and Joshua Donen’s Stars Road Entertainment have put together a two-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures TV. Running this new entity will be CBS drama department, senior vice president Robert Zotnowski. The plan for Stars Road is to get a bigger market share of broadcast TV and cable. The major focus will be drama. The horror projects will be handled by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures....

Sandberg entered the superhero world with a bang at the helm of DC movie Shazam! in 2019.
