Warner Bros. Pictures’ Superman Returns opened with $21 million on Wednesday. The movie was shown in 3,915 theatres giving it a $5,368 take per screen. The tally includes the Tuesday night screenings where the film technically opened a few hours before Wednesday. The official box-office total of $21,015,000 ranks the film as the 8th biggest opening movie for a Wednesday. The Wednesday opening record is held by Spider-Man 2 which took in over $40 million in 2004....

After almost a year spent rounding up the $28.7 million budget, Svensk Filmindustri has greenlit Sweden’s biggest movie project ever, the screen adaptation of Jan Guillou’s bestselling crusades trilogy Arn. The first of two movies based on Guillou’s books about a 12th century knight is set for its Scandinavian preem in December 2007. The sequel opens in the fall of 2008, according to Variety. The films will be based on scripts by Hans Gunnarsson, who previously adapted Guillou’s Evil for the screen....

The cast for The Expendables 2 is coming together quite nicely, with Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Arnold Schwarzenegger all confirmed to be taking on roles in this highly anticipated sequel. Creator of this hard-hitting franchise, Sylvester Stallone, has also confirmed Nicolas Cage in some capacity, and he wants to get John Travolta in there too. The action icon recently chatted with EW, offering some details as to what we can expect from this epic upcoming ensemble....

Taika Waititi is arguably best known for the films that he either directed, produced, or wrote the screenplay for. As a man with many talents, Waititi has often times overlapped these titles, sometimes going as far as to even star in the films himself. Teri Polo has signed on to star in Joe Dante’s supernatural feature The Hole. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has also been tapped for two episodes of CBS’ supernatural drama Ghost Whisperer. The Hole, from Bold Films and Benderspink, centers on Susan (Polo), a mother who moves with her teen sons to a rural house where the three are forced to face their fears after discovering a bottomless hole in the basement....

Colin Farrell will be starring as Oswald Cobblepot in a spinoff series derived from The Batman, fleshing out the backstory of the supervillain we will first meet in the new film in March. Not much has really been revealed about the spinoff other than that it follows Farrell as the iconic menace known to Gotham City as the Penguin. The Batman director Matt Reeves has now opened up a little more on what fans can expect from his planned “Batverse” in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly....

Francois Truffaut’s directorial debut The 400 Blows was the main hit of the 1959 Cannes Film Festival. This film was significantly different from mainstream cinema of that time which told little about human life and feelings. Film critic Truffaut was tired of script-centered films that lacked an author’s voice and creativity; he and his colleagues (Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette) who wrote for French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema were inspired by the films of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Howard Hawks, and wanted the cinema to be more fresh and exciting, thus helping solidify the idea of the director as ‘auteur....

We’re not saying that a theme song can make or break a series, but sometimes it’s the fanfare at the beginning of each show that gets us running to the TV set. It’s hard to think about the impact of a theme song these days when every streaming service has a “skip intro” feature, because it’s the theme song that sets the mood, and gets you in the mood to watch what’s about to unfold....

Before heading off on his sabbatical in October, Ryan Reynolds announced that he had wrapped filming on his new Apple TV+ movie, Spirited, a new musical take on the classic Dickens story A Christmas Carol. The film also stars Will Ferrell and Octavia Spencer and makes its debut in time for the festive season next year, but Reynolds has delivered a special Christmas treat with a short slideshow of images from the movie that he shared with fans on Instagram....

Netflix has released the trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale and it looks like Christmas is going to be pretty creepy this year. The latest trailer for the holiday special comes just days after fans were treated to a Season 2 teaser, which announced that the series is returning in April of next year. The April release date came as a nice surprise for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina followers, and the holiday special will be a tasty treat for some of the more impatient fans....

We reported back in January that director Sam Mendes would direct the upcoming James Bond 23, and it seems that job has forced him to leave another project. Collider recently spoke with producer Neal H. Moritz, who revealed that Mendes was no longer attached to direct Preacher. Here’s an excerpt from the site’s interview. Moritz also revealed that August had mentioned that he would be interested in directing the film himself and that this film will be the first in a series of films, which are based off the graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon....
