SPIDEY TO PREMIERE IN HOMETOWN The Tribeca Film Festival, originally launched by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in response to the terrorist attack on lower Manhattan in 2001, has been selected as the launching site of Spider-Man 3.The festival announced Wednesday that the Sony/Columbia picture, starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, will have its official premiere at a theater in downtown Astoria (the UA Kaufman Astoria 14), Spidey’s hometown, on April 30th and will have free simultaneous screenings in the other New York boroughs on that day....

BOX OFFICE FULL OF TREASURE The five-day Christmas holiday brought joy to studio execs as ticket sales soared 34 percent higher than those for the comparable weekend a year ago. The leader of the pack was National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which finished with $65.4 million over the five-day period. In second place was Will Smith’s I Am Legend,which collected $47.6 million. DEATH RATTLE FOR HD DVD A Toshiba spokesman acknowledged today (Monday) that the company is considering calling it quits in its format battle with Sony over high-definition video players. Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Oomari told the Wall Street Journalthat the turning point came last month when Warner Bros. announced it would no longer support Toshiba’s HD DVD format and would embrace Sony’s Blu-ray format exclusively. “Sales have been hurt since Warner’s decision,” he said, “and we are considering different options....

BOX OFFICE RUMBLES FOR JUNGLE The box office appeared to be an oasis in a parched economic landscape over the weekend as moviegoers plunked down a record $63.5 million for tickets to Paramount/DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, far exceeding analysts’ expectations. The total was also 35 percent ahead of the $47.2 million 3-day debut of the originalMadagascar over Memorial Day weekend in 2005 and just ahead of its $61-million gross over the four-day holiday period....

WITH NFL GONE, NBC LOSES YARDAGE In its first Sunday night of the season without football, NBC recorded disappointing results for the debut of Grease: You’re the One That I Want and the season premiere of The Apprentice.The 90-minute Greasespecial recorded an unimpressive 7.2 rating and a 10 share in the 8:00 p.m. hour to place third. It edged up a bit to a 7.7/11 in the 9:00-9:30 p.m. segment, but remained in third....

WALL STREET GIVES CBS BLACK EYE Several media conglomerates that were hit hard in Thursday’s attack of the bears on Wall Street recovered some of their losses today (Friday), but, as of midday, CBS had not. On Thursday, the broadcasting company fell 16 percent to a historic low of $4.51. It was down an additional .89 percent to $4.47 today, even as its corporate sibling Viacom rose 7.41 percent to $14....

CBS STRUGGLES TO STAY AHEAD CBS may still wear the crown as the television network with the largest audience, but it was apparent from its latest quarterly report that the crown sits uneasily on its head. Profits jumped 26 percent, it said, but sales were mostly down or flat in nearly all of its divisions as earnings growth stemmed primarily from having to pay lower taxes and interest rates, the shutting down of its UPN network, and employee layoffs....

Who would have thought that a Shakespearean-esque dramedy about a multi-billionaire family battling over the role of CEO for the family company would be such a successful plot for a series Well, Succession’s creator Jesse Armstrong, apparently. Since its first season, the HBO series has been a success between viewers and critics. After only three seasons, the Roy family, their family dramas, and hateful but lovable members already occupied their seats as pop culture titans....

Bravo announced today that supermodels Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford will host the network’s newest competition reality series Make Me A Supermodel. Based on the successful UK series, the beautiful and talented men and women selected will compete for a chance to launch their modeling career and win $100,000. The series is scheduled to premiere in the first quarter of 2008. As previously announced, Bravo viewers will vote each week to determine who stays to walk the “Supermodel” catwalk again and who goes home....

FX will tempt viewers with Taboo, a drama series from award-winning producer Ridley Scott, Academy Award-nominated writer Steven Knight and award-winning actor/producer Tom Hardy who will also star, it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions. Scott Free Films and Hardy Son & Baker will commence production in mid- to late 2015 in the U.K., with the series tentatively slated to debut in mid-2016....

Filmmakers were granted unprecedented access to the United States Aircraft Carrier Nimitz to create this historic ten part series premiering Sunday, April 27 at 9 PM ET on PBS. The first episode introduces many of the crewmen who describe their lives aboard the ship. The filmmakers were basically embedded with the crew on the USS Nimitz for the six month deployment. They shot 1600 hours of film and edited it down to ten, however when viewers watch this series they will wish it lasted an entire season....
