MORE BRITISH ACCENTS ON U.S. TV? Should a writers’ strike shut down U.S. television production in the coming months, broadcast networks may substitute programs produced in Canada, the U.K., and Australia, Daily Varietyreported today (Thursday). Although the trade publication said that producers and networks have had “conversations” with international producers and broadcasters, no deals, apparently, have been negotiated. “I’ve been communicating with people and looking all over the world for ideas,” NBC Entertainment Co-chairman Ben Silverman told Variety....

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment snapped up the feature film rights to the book, “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.” The biography was written by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. Published in 2006 from Atria Books, the book postulated that Harry Houdini was really a spy for Britain and was also asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II’s court in prerevolutionary Russia....

Zack Snyder is currently making the European press rounds in support of his latest directorial effort Legend of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, and he let slip some small but important details in regards to his next project, the highly touted Superman. While very little is known about this DC Comics reboot, it has been said that the character of Superman will be updated with a story that fits our current cultural atmosphere....

After Sylvester McCoy was cast as the wizard Radagast in director Peter Jackson’s upcoming prequel The Hobbit, there was much speculation as to how big the actor’s role would be, as his character doesn’t appear much in the original book. Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore is gearing up to write both a sequel to I, Robot and a remake of The Thing. According to Variety, Moore will be doing these projects as part of a new deal he has signed with Universal Media Studios. The contract has him continuing his work on Battlestar Galactica until that show wraps early next year. He will simultaneously begin development of his other projects for a 2008 start date....

The Weinstein’s will be minus one big producer in one of their upcoming releases. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Scott Rudin has walked away from the upcoming Weinstein Co. film, The Reader. The news apparently surprised Harvey and Bob Weinstein, since it seemed the Weinsteins and Rudin had settled their arguements about the film. Rudin had been pushing for a 2009 release, in order to properly complete post-production, but the Weinstein’s had been insistent on a 2008 release....

For a long while, it seemed that a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider would be happening at some point, but it seemed that the Alicia Vikander-led franchise’s best hopes were all but dashed by the onset of the Covid pandemic and the delays it brought to the entertainment industry. While it seemed that MGM was still planning on pushing ahead with the sequel, in July this year, it was revealed that their window of opportunity had run out and their option on the rights had expired....

The sport of hockey isn’t one often showcased in American cinema, although it has given us such gems as the 70s comedy Slap Shot and the 2004 drama Miracle.
