Sissy Spacek and Mary Steenburgen are joining Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn in Four Christmases for New Line, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Kristin Chenoweth and Robert Duvall also star in the Spyglass Entertainment holiday-themed romantic comedy from director Seth Gordon and writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The story revolves around a newly married couple (Witherspoon and Vaughn) who decide to brave visits to all sets of their parents for the Christmas holiday – despite the scars each has from being raised in broken homes....

Following his surprisingly big-screen debut, video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog is back for that difficult second album with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Well, the early verdicts are now in, and while it doesn’t sound like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 attempts anything too radical, the sequel should provide another good time for kids, families, and Sega fans. We shall begin with Carlos Aguilar of TheWrap, who commended director Jeff Fowler for doing exactly what he was asked to do, bringing “sentimentality,” “silliness,” and “action” to the follow-up....

Sony Pictures has acquired a pitch from screenwriter Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher, Mirror Mirror), which will delve into the origins of Dracula. Little is known about the untitled project, except that Sony plans to make this a period piece. Joe Roth and Palak Patel will produce, although no director is attached at this time. Ironically, the project brings together the writer and producers of both Snow White movies hitting theaters this year....

Sony Pictures Releasing International passed $1.634 billion at the box office on Sunday, making 2009 the highest grossing year of all time internationally for the studio and breaking the division’s previous all-time high which it set in 2006, it was announced by Jeff Blake, chairman, Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. The year has been driven by the success of a number of breakthrough hits in the international marketplace. The studio’s most recent blockbuster is 2012, from director Roland Emmerich, which opened this past weekend to more than $165 million internationally ($230....

In a Tweet from July 3, 2022, Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas shared a clip from the famed sound studio Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage, where the orchestral scores for films like Casablanca, Blazing Saddles, Ghost, and Back to the Future were recorded. The ten-second musical clip showed an orchestra’s string section performing the score for the third season of the Paramount+ series. As the Tweet emphasizes, the clip pays homage to the late Jerry Goldsmith....

Netflix has released a new set of posters for their hit series Stranger Things and they pay homage to Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me. It makes perfect sense for these tribute posters to be released as the hit show draws heavily from both of the classic 80s movies in a way that still feels unique and fresh. In addition, the score, which was written on synthesizer, is also a throwback of sorts and is more than a little reminiscent of the soundtrack work of John Carpenter....

BLOCKBUSTER TO CLOSE 1,000 STORES Facing increased competition from the likes of Netflix, video-on-demand, and kiosk operators, Blockbuster now plans to shut down nearly 1,000 stores by the end of next year, according to an SEC filing. The figure is more than twice the 410-450 unprofitable stores that it previously had said it planned to shutter. The new figure represents about 22 percent of Blockbuster’s total of 4,356. The filing also disclosed that 35 percent of Blockbuster stores account for 80 percent of its profits....

CBS WINS WITH RERUNS Despite airing an entire evening of reruns, CBS was able to hold off a strong challenge from ABC’s slate of reality shows Monday to win the night. ABC dominated the first two hours of primetime with The Bachelorette,which averaged 7.16 million viewers, peaking in the final half hour with 7.80 million. The second week of Here Come the Newlywedsat 10:00 p.m., however, drew only 4.77 million. Once again NBC had better luck with its news programming than any of its entertainment shows....

NIELSEN EXPANDING TO DORMS Nielsen Media Research, the company responsible for ratings and audience analysis of broadcast and cable output, says it will begin including college students who watch TV in their dorms in its sampling. Nielsen has long been criticized for excluding viewers who watch TV outside their homes, at hotels, bars, airports, health clubs and the like. Nielsen made it plain, however, that it is not going to begin measuring TV viewing in public places and will include college students only when they are already part of a selected Nielsen family....

Bad news for fans of Swamp Thing, as the show has been canceled on DC Universe after only one season. The news comes after just the first episode of the series has been aired, which showed great promise for the new comic book adaptation. Details on why exactly the show is being ended weren’t made clear, but previous reports suggest executives had all but given up on the project before it had even completed filming....

Filmmaker Utpal Kalal’s documentary The 14th February & Beyond will make history at San Diego Comic-Con. The film will be premiered at SDCC’s special film program Comic-Con Independent Film Festival on July 21, the first time an Indian film has been showcased at Comic-Con’s official festival program. It has been selected for the main competition alongside 49 movies from seven different pop culture genres, including Action/Adventure, Animation, Comics-Oriented, Documentary (Pop Culture-Oriented), Horror/Suspense, Humor, and Science Fiction/Fantasy....

The Batman fans could be waiting a while, even forever, for a sequel. According to a report by Variety about the state of the DC Cinematic Universe, The Batman writer and director Matt Reeves is still “on track” for The Batman 2, which would see Robert Pattinson reprise the role of The Dark Knight. But, “the project remains in development” and has not even been given the greenlight, with the report concluding that “any future film is years away” — which is certainly not what fans of The Batman wanted to hear....

The Batman will show Bruce Wayne slowly discovering his billionaire playboy persona as he learns how best to tackle the criminal underworld of Gotham City. Speaking with Fandango, The Batman star Zoe Kravitz revealed some details of Bruce Wayne’s evolution, confirming what many had suspected about this latest big-screen version of Bruce Wayne. Namely, that this movie will see him develop his playboy alter ego. From what we have seen so far from Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, the vengeful billionaire is far too engrossed in beating criminals to a pulp all night and brooding during the day to play the part of a naïve elite....

Relativity Media has closed a deal with Oscar-winner Julia Roberts to play the Queen in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell). Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in April. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012. Relativity’s Snow White, a retelling of one of the most beloved fables of all-time, will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure....

Russell Crowe has officially boarded director Darren Aronofsky’s biblical drama Noah. In the narrative of the ark, God sees the wickedness of man and is grieved by his creation, resolving to send a great flood to cleanse the Earth. However, God chooses a man named Noah to live and preserve mankind through Noah’s family. God then proceeds to give Noah detailed instructions on how to build the ark. When Noah and the animals are safe on board, God sends the Flood, which rises until all the mountains are covered and all life on Earth is destroyed....
