Despite the fact that it was about to start production on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona, Columbia Pictures has halted work on Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming major league baseball project Moneyball. The film, which was to star Brad Pitt, has been placed into “limited turnaround” by Columbia Picture’s Amy Pascal. According to Variety, this gives Soderbergh a chance to set up the project at another studio. It is currently being shopped to both Warner Brothers and Paramount....

i>STOMP WINS BY A YARD Surprising just about every analyst, Sony’s Stomp the Yard emerged as the No. 1 film over the weekend, earning an estimated $22 million, despite no major stars, a budget of only $14 million, and mixed reviews. Stompstomped out the three-week reign of Night at the Museumat the top of the box office, which dropped to No. 2 with $17.1 million. Its four-week total now stands at $185....

SAG WON’T WALK OUT WITH WRITERS The Screen Actors Guild notified members Tuesday that if the Writers Guild of America calls a strike against movie and TV producers, the actors under the “No Strike” clause in their collective-bargaining agreements must continue to go to work and audition for work for struck producers. However, the SAG notice added, actors are encouraged “on your own time” to walk WGA picket lines “to show your support of their effort....

“SHORT LIST” OF EMMY CONTENDERS REVEALED In an apparent effort to avoid last year’s embarrassment when the titles of the “short lists” of Emmy contenders leaked out on the Internet, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences made the unprecedented decision on Thursday to itself reveal the full lists. The lists – ten shows in the best-comedy category; ten in the best-drama – are determined by the votes of all members of the academy....

DOBBS ABRUPTLY QUITS CNN In a surprise announcement, controversial CNN host Lou Dobbs said shortly after his show began Wednesday night, “This will be my last broadcast.” There was no immediate explanation from Dobbs himself or from CNN about why he was leaving so abruptly in the middle of a week with more than a year remaining on his contract. Speculation immediately arose that Dobbs would be heading for Fox News, which might welcome his conservative viewpoints on such matters as immigration reform and corporate bailouts....

Even though a popular CW series was given a sixth season yesterday, it seems that the show will be going through some changes in their ranks. Entertainment Weekly’s Ausiello Files is reporting that Supernatural series creator and showrunner Eric Kripke will be stepping down from his showrunner post for the show’s sixth season. The site reports that executive producer Sera Gamble, who has been a part of the show from day one, will replace Kripke and his co-showrunner Robert Singer as the showrunner and will handle the day-to-day affairs of the series....

While Gulf Coast residents prepare for the worst as Tropical Storm Isaac draws near, a movie production has shut down to try and weather the storm. Shooting has halted for one week on The Butler, director Lee Daniels’ biopic about longtime White House butler Eugene Allen, played by Forest Whitaker. The drama had been shooting in New Orleans since late July, and they were expected to wrap on September 7. Production shut down on Monday for the entire week, as the cast and crew relocated to drier climates....

The Good This is just a terrific show with Jim Rockford being the anti-hero we all wish we could be ourselves. The Bad I wish James Garner and Stephen J. Cannell would have done some commentary tracks. The Rockford Files is one of the best written shows I have ever watched. To look at Jim Rockford (James Garner) we would see him as this All-American male fighting the bad guys. When you get past that superficial view, what you have is a small time private investigator who is just trying to run a square business after having done some time in the joint....

Sam Raimi’s possible involvement with Spider-Man 4 has been uncertain for some time now, but the director of the first three films featuring Marvel’s web-slinging hero has said that he’s waiting to see the script by James Vanderbilt to determine whether or not he intends to direct. Raimi spoke to SCI FI Wire about where he sees the future films going. “Right now James Vanderbilt is writing the script, and he’s working on it, and I’m excited to read it,” Raimi said....
