Seth Meyers gets the plum job of “Weekend Update” anchor next to Amy Poehler in a newly streamlined Saturday Night Live this season, the show’s creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, said on Thursday. Meyers, entering his fifth season on the late-night institution, must replace the popular Tina Fey on the fake-news anchor desk. Like Fey, Meyers will also be one of the show’s head writers. Four cast members auditioned for the gig, but Michaels said Meyers’ writing ability and his chemistry with Poehler made the difference....

Netflix’s Inside Job, despite positive audience reception and a renewal for season two, has unfortunately been canceled. Created by Shion Takeuchi, Inside Job took a humorous look at the world of interconnected conspiracy theories, crafting a relatable lead in the form of super-scientist Reagan Ridley while poking fun at the shadowy organizations that supposedly govern the world behind the scenes. While it leaned heavily into the typical humor you’d find in other adult-animated shows, there was a genuine heart underneath it all that made the show compelling to watch....

TNT’s critically acclaimed drama series Southland will return for a fourth season. TNT has ordered 10 new episodes of the gritty, realistic cop drama, which wrapped up its third season March 8. Southland stars Michael Cudlitz (Band of Brothers, A River Runs Through It), Shawn Hatosy (Dexter, Public Enemies), Regina King (Ray, Jerry Maguire)) and Ben McKenzie (The O.C.). The series has averaged 2.9 million viewers this season, up 6% compared to the second season....

You can bring your favorite chimps back into this universe on DVD and Blu-Ray this November. Space Chimps will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 25. The film will be released in the standard format for $29.98 SRP and on Blu-Ray for $39.99. The film stars the voices of Jeff Daniels, Stanley Tucci, Patrick Warburton, Cheryl Hines, Andy Samberg and Kristen Chenoweth. When Ham III, the slacker grandson of NASA’s legendary chimpanzee astronaut, is recruited to help retrieve a lost space probe, he has a close encounter of the hilarious kind as he teams up with the lovely Lieutenant Luna and their by-the-book commander, Titan....

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have teased the conflict that will occur between Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales and Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 in the upcoming animated sequel. While not quite the villain of the piece (that honor falls to B-movie bad guy The Spot), Miller does state that Miles and the Spider-Man variant from an alternate future will not see eye-to-eye. Introduced at the end of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Oscar Isaac will have a much larger role in the follow-up as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099....

During the Star Trek Universe panel at Comic Con 2021, a teaser trailer was released for the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. Although there have been many animated Star Trek projects in the past, this one is notable due to the fact that Captain Kathryn Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, is returning to the franchise to lend her voice in the series. She is not featured much in the trailer, but her voice is heard briefly at the end, confirming her exciting presence....

Following on from the seminal original series’ diverse cast of characters and thought-provoking storylines, Star Trek: The Next Generation would up the ante in every aspect. On screen from 1987 to 1994, and the first live-action follow-up to Star Trek, Next Generation ran for the course of seven series and four feature-length films, helmed behind the scenes by the mind of the original series, Gene Roddenberry, and charismatically on screen by Patrick Stewart....

A galaxy far, far away finally has its first openly gay couple. As many fans had suspected, and as had been hinted at strongly, Orka and Flix are in a relationship with one another. The news was confirmed by two of the show’s executive producers, Justin Ridge and Brandon Auman. This is, indeed, a major step forward for LGBTQ representation in one of the biggest franchises in the world. The news broke during a recent podcast appearance....

No film has been as nearly divisive as Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, the Star Wars movie which tore the fandom apart. Actress Kelly Marie Tran abandoned social media after fans turned their hate against her, and she received only a forgettable minute of screen time in the sequel....

G.I. JOE WON’T BE SCREENED FOR CRITICS Presumably convinced that it will be roasted by critics, Paramount has decided not to screen G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobrato critics before its opening on Friday, the Associated Press reported today (Tuesday). The studio has implemented a non-traditional strategy in promoting the film, showing it in advance only to carefully selected groups and a handful of what it regards as dependable bloggers and website creators....

WALLACE SAYS RATHER SHOULD HAVE QUIT In an interview with Katie Couric on the Todayshow, 60 Minutescorrespondent Mike Wallace said that Dan Rather should have resigned from CBS when the scandal broke over his report about President Bush’s National Guard service. “It seems to me that Dan should have said, ‘If they go, I go.’ If the people on whom he depended are fired, lose their jobs…he was the guy on camera....

NIGHTLINE WINS AGAIN Chalk up another wild-card victory for ABC’s Nightline. The late-night news show beat both CBS’s The Late Show With David Lettermanand NBC’s The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brienin total viewers last week and came in second behind Tonightamong viewers 25-54. IDOL STILL GOLDEN BUT SLIGHTLY TARNISHED Wednesday night’s edition of American Idol – a “performance” night that was delayed because of President Obama’s address to Congress on Tuesday – drew an average of 24.25 million viewers, down 12 percent from a year ago when a “results” night recorded 27.55 million. Recently at the 2006 Comic-Con International, I had the distinct pleasure of being able to sit down with the Godfather of not only independent cinema, but low budget, exploitation, sci fi and just about every other genre, Roger Corman. Having grown up in the Eighties and Nineties on a steady diet of Corman produced films, this was truly something I was looking forward to. He was on hand to promote his library of titles that in 2005 he sold to Disney....

Maybe the Brooklyn Nine-Nine movie will end up happening, as Terry Crews is still pushing for it. Originally, the comedy series premiered on Fox before it was later canceled after five seasons. Because it was such a popular series, NBC picked up Brooklyn Nine-Nine where it aired an additional three seasons. The cast and crew wrapped up the final season in 2021. While the show is over, it doesn’t necessarily mean we have not seen the last of these characters....

The 1980s produced some of the most beloved and renowned movies of all time. From comedy to horror to action, 80s movies of all genres have come to be considered classics, leaving their mark on viewers of the past and present. However, regardless of if the film is considered the best of the best, some movies include individual scenes that are so impactful, they seem to define the generation. Maybe it’s because it’s visually pleasing, or maybe it’s because it adds something new to the plot; whatever the reason, some scenes have been considered so iconic and groundbreaking that their image is forever imprinted on the public conscience, still being referenced in pop culture today....
