Sam Raimi knows that many people are curious about the status of Spider-Man 4, and he has decided to give us an update on where things are going with the production. Nickelodeon has renewed the hit animated series SpongeBob SquarePants for a ninth season today, which will begin airing in 2012. The 26-episode order will drive the series past the 200 episode milestone. SpongeBob SquarePants, which started airing on Nickelodeon in 1999, has been the top-rated children’s series for the past 10 years in the ages 2-11 demographic. It also ranks as basic cable’s top animated show in total viewers, with the series airing in over 171 territories worldwide....

NBC Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad has confirmed that Steve Carell will definitely part ways from The Office after this coming season, when his contract expires in 2011. According to Variety, the actor’s seven-year run as erratic Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott will end, but Bromstad said the show will go on. In an affirmation of NBC’s faith in a post-Carell, The Office, Bromstad said the sitcom will remain in its 9 p....

MPAA CUTS COSTS (OUT OF REPORT ) Saying that he questioned the validity of studio estimates about how much they spend on making movies, MPAA chief Dan Glickman told reporters that the estimates were removed from the group’s annual state-of-the-industry report. “There is nothing conspiratorial about this,” Glickman told the New York Times. “We don’t have the numbers. We didn’t do them.” In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Times,Glickman said, “Year-to-year average costs comparisons are useless and misleading....

INDIANA JONES AND THE GOLDEN BOX OFFICE Every box-office analyst agrees: the Memorial Day holiday debut of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skullis going to be enormous. The only remaining question is whether it will be more enormous than Spider-Man 3, which opened In May 2007 with a record $151.6 million. The film is opening in 4,206 theaters domestically and in 61 other countries. The worldwide result could be as much as $400 million, a few analysts are predicting....

IDOL – DESPITE DROP, IT’S STILL BIGGEST Despite efforts by the producers of American Idolto streamline the show’s opening weeks and to add another judge, ratings for the talent contest have dropped 8 percent from last year and 14 percent among adults 18-49, the Los Angeles Timesobserved today (Monday), citing data from Nielsen Media Research. It remains, nevertheless, the top-rated show on television, trouncing its competitors by an enormous margin. “I wake up every morning and I cannot believe that a show in its eighth season is as dominant as this show is,” Fox exec Mike Darnell, who oversees Idol for the network, told today’s (Monday) Los Angeles Times....

NETWORKS RELIEVED BY EARLY RATINGS Despite mostly negative critical reaction to the networks’ new programs for the fall, ratings indicate that after the first two weeks of the season it all amounts to “so far so good.” Broadcasting & Cableobserved that the mere fact that no “precipitous ratings declines” occurred in week two – after viewers got their first look at the new fare – “represents success so far.” Particularly impressive, the trade publication noted, was the performance of CBS, which saw NCISrise to the top of the ratings list even though the unheralded show is in its sixth season....

The CW Network mainstay Supernatural has promoted Mark Sheppard, who plays The King of Hell named Crowley, to series regular for Season 10. The actor has recurred as Crowley since Season 5, appearing in 35 episodes of the series since 2009. The character played a major part in the show’s Season 9 finale, “Do You Believe In Miracles?”, which ended with Dean (Jensen Ackles) being turned into a demon under Crowley’s watch....

The CW Network’s Supernatural is giving one of the Winchester Brothers a new love interest this season. Actress Liane Balaban is joining the cast in Season 8 as a recurring guest star. The actress will portray Amelia, a doctor with a “damaged soul” who becomes romantically involved with Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki). The character is still trying to overcome a traumatic experience, although we eventually learn she is, “brave, sweet and sarcastic....
